Description Mines at Shildon were controlled by the King before 1475. The mines were expanded from 1708 and throughout the 18th Century.
Easterby, Hall & Company worked the mines after 1805 and searched for lead veins below the existing mine. They introduced coal-fired steam pumps to solve the drainage problem.
However Shildon's remote location and distance from coal mines, meant that the cost of transporting fuel soon proved too expensive.
The Derwent Mining Company continued to work the mines after 1812 using more economical water-powered machines.
The mine closed in 1877.
The Engine shaft was 715 feet deep.
