Description
On 15 April 2019, shortly before 18:50 CEST, fire broke out beneath the roof of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. The cathedral was in the midst of undergoing a major restoration and part of the roof was covered in scaffolding.The City of Paris was, and to a degree still is left devastated by this horrific blow to her history, and in a way the history of the world, as irreplaceable pieces of art go to ash.

When I first saw the headline, I thought it was Notre Dame University, not THE Notre Dame. My thoughts and prayers go out to the cathedral and to Paris. Beautiful work here, Omnipotrent.

I just heard that because the Assassin's Creed Notre Dame was so detailed, and accurate, the architect rebuilding it is using the game version as a model. And Ubisoft is donating money for the reconstruction effort.

Well, at the very least, Ubisoft has offered their 3D model of Notre Dame to the french authorities.

Yeah, other then the fact that the spire on the back of the building was built many years after the events of the game, the cathedral is brick to brick accurate.

That's the work of Viollet-le-Duc. A Goth-Medieval fanatic who was put in charge of renovating the cathedral back in the 19th century, after the revolution, and wanted to add something that gave the building "French Pride." He didn't do it for Catholics, and wasn't even religious. Many didn't share his views, but the spire stayed.
That's the story I read on Washington Post at least.

Sometimes I wonder...What landmark will be next. In my lifetime, at least three famous buildings have been destroyed for one reason or another. World Trade Center, The Famous Phantom of the Opera set, and now Notre Dame.

I was crying when I saw the videos. I went there last year and prayed during the service. I hope that soon the Notre Dame will rise from the ashes.

On the upside, I'm told nobody was hurt or killed. On the downside... that's 900 years of history that was damaged.

So many years of history, gone in less than a day

Roughly 300 million Euros have already been pledged by two French billionaires to rebuild it.

So sad this had to happen at all. Thankfully, people from all over the world are already sending in thousands of millions of dollars to aid in the rebuilding effort. Plus the good thing is that while the roof and spire are gone, many of the treasures stored there (including the Crown of Thorns, Shroud of St. Louis, the Rose Windows, the bell towers themselves, etc.) were either spared or saved by the valiant efforts of over 400 of the French Fire Brigade. It truly is a miracle of the Lord they succeeded in halting the blaze before it got worse than it did. Prayers go out to all French and fellow Catholics as we try to rebuild this jewel to the world.
