[438 words]

If Lyle's personality is to be described in one word, it's "unimpressed". He doesn't bother with the emotional affairs of human beings, and maintains an apathetic stance towards political happenings. There is one thing, and one thing only that catches Lyle's attention like nothing else: machines. From the simple arrays of gears and chains to massive supercomputers, Lyle loves them with the passion of a thousand exploding nuclear reactors.

Something to fix or an interesting machine is always bound to elicit excitement and eagerness in Lyle, while mistreatment of a machine will unfailingly get him into a disastrous mood. It doesn't matter if the machine is mechanical or electronic in nature, he loves them all the same: it can be argued that he relates better to machines than to human beings.

He doesn't advertise it, but favours are his personal currency. Whether he likes or loathes you, if you've done something good by him it is in his great interest to repay the favour. This ranges from acquiring caffeine for him during dire times to calling the ambulance on him when he's dying.

Brief and to the point in his social interactions, Lyle doesn't endear himself to most people--personally, at least. Professionally, some people commend his indifference. His practicality extends to the point where he takes things as they are; as facts instead of one possibility among many: he doesn't waste his time on what-ifs and could-have-beens. This makes him unlikely to drown in angst, but also blinds him from possibilities--especially in relationships. Another factor is his emotional disconnect; his inability to tell, let alone understand, the nuances of emotions (his own included).

After machines and the favours he owes, the other thing Lyle values is freedom. Due to his lack of empathy, this mostly applies to his freedom, but he is not one to impose on other people willingly either. He dislikes the restraints of being close to someone or working under an authority, but two decades of life have beaten it into his head that such things are necessary for his continued survival.

Most things that come as common sense to most people are either mere curiosities or nonsense altogether to Lyle. Examples include, but are not limited to: how cannibalism is taboo, taking someone's things without their consent is considered stealing, and forging metals in your bedroom ought to start a fire. Either his detachment from his parents (and subsequently the rest of the world) has caused him to regard the world in a way different from most people, or his different view on the world was what caused the detachment in the first place.

Likes:
» Machinery and electronics; technology in general
» Taking things apart and putting them back together to figure them out (which sadly can't be applied to humans and other living beings)
» Scrap metals, broken things, fixing and building machines
» Exploring, freedom, running
» Coffee: both the smell and the taste

Dislikes:
» Any kind of strong smell/any assault to his sense of smell
» Being disturbed when he's deeply involved with machines
» "Propriety"
» Being cornered into a situation he can't run from
» Porn

Background History:

[1000 words]

Lyle was born into a family of wealth. Both of his parents were businesspeople, and their wealth were newly acquired, not old money passed down through previous generations. His parents knew they couldn't leave their work if they wanted to keep their place at the respectable place on the social ladder, and yet they couldn't leave their little son alone at home because wouldn't he be lonely? So they brought him to their social and business gatherings.

As it turned out, that was a bad idea.

There was nothing for a child to do in such meetings, and thus Lyle was always left to sit still without nothing to do. Which was plain unacceptable. Which was why he did things to occupy himself with, and was it really his fault that he didn't know dismantling the rolling chair he was sitting on, or one of the pens or that watch that was just lying on the table, or even simply sneaking out and away to have more fun exploring would turn out to be bad things for a child to do?

It wasn't long before Lyle and his parents settled into a routine. Lyle disassembled a machine or electronic device, then his parents would lecture him on the inappropriateness of it, of their confusion with his obsession, and why couldn't be he like other boys playing football outside getting physical and being social? and maybe it was more than one or two things he had disassembled and maybe he didn't always reassembled them correctly but his parents just couldn't see the fascinating structures and mechanisms all of the machines and devices had inside them. Or Lyle would run, run with no destination in mind and only the desire to get away in his heart, then he would be overwhelmed by the scents of the outside world or his parents would find him or someone would see him and report him to the police (or, after enough attempts, straight to his parents).

Then one day, Lyle's parents gave up. Thinking perhaps someone else could change Lyle's exasperating behaviour, they sent him off to a boarding school at the age of eleven. With a lot of things he could do and plenty opportunities to explore the expansive school grounds, Lyle no longer rebelled as much as he had back home. There, his obsession with machines and electronics was cultivated and grew even more passionate: there were many kinds of devices he hadn't seen at home, there were other kids who let him have their broken mobiles to pick apart, and better yet, an older boy introduced him to a world of people like him. People who loved machines, or at least liked them enough to tinker with them endlessly.

Lyle's time at boarding school wasn't all that dramatic. It was true that he stuck out like a sore thumb with his peculiar behaviour and machine geekery (not to mention his oversensitive sense of smell), but most of the bullies who tried backed off once it was apparent that any physical harm to him or his things would be paid back equally and verbal abuse just slid right off him. Some kids liked him for fixing their things (eventually he moved past exploratory disassembling to purposeful repairing of most machines he knew) and most others are neutral about him. Incapable of reading social cues and manipulating emotional responses, however, Lyle had little in means of navigating the kind of wilderness a life away from home could be, so he had to make use of something else. Which, he figured out, were trading favours. It was a private system he told to no one, but people he had done certain things to were more amenable to doing certain things for him, and soon favours became Lyle's personal currency.

After leaving school at age sixteen, Lyle forwent Sixth Form and went through formal apprenticeship programs by way of a vocational school, a compromise between his parents (who wanted him to continue his schooling) and himself (who would rather work than study). During his years doing apprenticeship, Lyle realised that working for someone else meant necessary restraints on his personal freedom. Physically running away was often not an option in less than ideal situations, and in fact could get him sacked. Because he had something he wanted in his workplaces (namely access to various kinds of machines and devices he could work with), Lyle actually learned how to listen to someone else and not run every time things aren't going in his favour. He still committed more faux pas than the average people his age, and he couldn't seem to understand how those things were socially unacceptable in the first place, but everybody was happy to chalk it up to Lyle being, well, odd.

After finishing his apprenticeship, the first job Lyle landed was maintenance work in an office building that was apparently prestigious enough to satisfy his parents (which made it easier for them to brag about and be proud of their son). At first he thought he would prefer work in factories, with the big important machines, but it turned out maintenance work could be as challenging and interesting. His employers seemed to like him, too, mostly because he was always unfazed by angry people complaining about broken things.

Not even five years working there, though, the building started going through heavy renovations. He wasn't a construction worker so no, he couldn't keep working there, and he had to find another job. Hearing about the prestigious hotel hiring new people through his mates from secondary school, he decided to apply as maintenance worker in Aspro Corvus, figuring his parents would approve of it. It wouldn't hurt to keep them happy, especially because it was the kind of work he liked. The hotel was located in another country; perfect for Lyle’s perpetual desire to explore. His mates asked an affiliation of their mechanics' guild-of-some-sorts in the USA to help him settle down there.

Trivia:
» Has an oversensitive sense of smell. He used to wear medical masks all the time to help him breathe through the scents of his surroundings, but it became less necessary as he grew up. He still has a pack of them on his person at all times, though.
» Cannot stay still, at least his foot is drawing patterns on the floor or his hands are playing with something (his sleeves, his bag, his belt loops, something in his pockets).
» Is a very hands-on person; finds it difficult to learn by visuals or audio only.
» Isn't book smart.
» Is good at running and sneaking around places he shouldn't be.

RP Method & Time Zone: Literature, script, and headcanons are all fine. Preferred methods are through dA Chat and LINE (om.tivi, my PC account is inaccessible at the moment). dA Notes and Google Docs are okay too. I have Skype (omtivi) but it's a last resort, as the thing causes too many problems to my laptop.

My time zone is GMT +7. As of writing this I have no uni classes so as long as you notify me beforehand I can attempt to be available at any time. Usually just not weekends, because I am often out on weekends.
