well, this is a legend from Vienna. In the waters of the Danube it is said, a kind of merfolk is living, the 'Donaufürst', which means Lord of the river Danube with his daughters, the 'Donauweibchen'. The story goes, that a fisherman who was in peril to drown in the waves was saved by one of this girls because she fell in love with him. She told the man he should watch the waters over the next days and if it stays clear nothing bad would happen, but when it turns red her father would have killed her, and as you can guess, it turned red. it also is said, the other daughters care for drowned fishermen or boatmen in a palace under the waters.
