Description It wasn't that she wasn't feeling well; Ylia was just kind of lonely. Kanda had left for a mission two weeks ago, was supposed to be back last week on Tuesday, and it was now the third week, Christmas Eve, and Kanda wasn't back yet. Sitting on the windowsill of her room, Ylia let out the umpteenth sigh of the day and set down her sketch pad, not being able to find the motivation to draw anything, not even the simplest circle.
Ylia climbed down from the sill and moved to her door. Turning the knob, she continued outside of her room and down the hallway. She hadn't had a mission in a while, at least not a solo mission. But she didn't go on many of those, being as how she wasn't the greatest fighter in the world. So now, she was simply in her regular clothes, a long skirt with a blouse, her hair let down, just some of it tied back in a bow.
She ignored everyone she passed, just looking for the place most people would go when they were quite, besides the cafeteria. Ylia didn't drown her sorrows in food, rather she moved to the library, one of the quietest and least active rooms of the order.
With a nice novel and a cozy chair in front of a fire place, Ylia settled in to forget her loneliness with a book. This only worked so long, once the book was long finished, and Ylia had found herself in a deep sleep, the thoughts of loneliness had to come back. With her dreams filled, she barely recognized that her arm was really being shaken, and she wasn't just dreaming of it.
A startled gasp came from her lips when her eyes finally opened. And in front of her was a hand holding her coat out to her. She blinked a couple times, staring at the trench like coat and scarf held out to her, like she had forgotten you wear coats.
"Put it on," the owner of the hand ordered, snapping Ylia out of her sleep induced staring.
She reached for the coat and took what was offered. Once she stood, the coat and scarf were quickly adorning her lithe frame, and she followed the figure from the library. Whoever it was, had a hood on, and being sleepy still, Ylia wasn't even going to try to guess who it was, regardless of the hints already freely given to her.
It began to be confusing as to what was going on, when the figure led Ylia from the library, down the hallway, and soon they were in the forest surrounding the Black Order Headquarters. Only when they were out along the country side, amidst the sleeping trees, did the figure release the hidden identity.
"It was supposed to be a surprise, but if I go any farther you might get a little worried," he mentioned as he took down the scarf that had once acted as a hood, just to wrap it tightly around his neck.
"Kanda!" Ylia shouted, forgetting every emotion she had felt in the past three weeks, save happiness, and jumped the man; her arms wrapped around his neck tightly, her legs automatically bending at the knee to wrap around his waist.
It was all Kanda could do to keep from falling over as he returned Ylia's over-enthusiastic hug.
"Hello there," He mumbled, still trying to steady himself and unlock her ankles from behind him, right over his rear end.
"Kanda!" she exclaimed again, tightening her hold, "I've missed you so much!"
"I can tell," he croaked out, her arms almost strangling him.
Ylia giggled and finally let go of him, hopping down for her feet to crunch the snow beneath them. She took a second and sighed, staring at the blue haired exorcist in front of her, with a soft smile.
All around them, the snow had stopped falling, but had left a substantial white blanket across the ground. The sleeping trees, bear of all leaves, had a nice coat of snow upon the branches giving them a sparkle with the icicles. The gray sky didn't look so sad anymore either, out in the brisk air, crunching on the snow, Ylia could only smile now, while before the miserable sky had looked dark and bleak.
"Hey, you coming?" Kanda asked, snapping the girl out of her trance.
"Hm?" she hummed, tightening the coat around her shoulders.
Kanda took hold of a gate, belonging to a wooden fence, and opened it, gesturing for Ylia to go through. He didn't smile, but his eyes sparkled, and that's what made Ylia return a smile and move through the gate. She stopped and waited for Kanda to catch up, and then the two walked side by side.
"Sorry, I was late," He said, not looking down to the shorter girl, just by an inch.
"Why were you?" She replied, locking her arm around his.
"They wouldn't let me out of the damn hospital. So I had to sneak out."
"Oh? Did they catch you a couple times?" She giggled.
Kanda sighed and didn't answer, giving Ylia all the answer she needed.
She replied with a giggle and: "So where are we going, Yu?"
"You'll see when we get there, Miss Ylia," He replied with one of his famous smirks.
Ylia nodded and rested her head against his shoulder as they walked, careful to step over any rocks or fallen tree branches.
After a while, Kanda pulled Ylia to a stop, making the young lady look up to him.
"Kanda?" she asked, giving him a quizzical look.
"Well, I have an early Christmas gift for you, since you're into that stuff," he commented, looking at her.
"Oh?" she chuckled, eyes smiling just as much as she was.
Kanda nodded and reached into his pocked, producing a piece of fabric.
"What?" Ylia asked, going from Kanda's face, to the strip of cloth, back to his face.
"It's a blindfold, but it on," he grumbled.
"Uh…" Ylia hesitated.
Kanda rolled his eyes and responded with spinning the girl around and tying the fabric around her eyes, the knot just above her red bow.
"H-hey!" Ylia stammered as she was tirwled back around.
"I gave you the ability to do it, you didn't take it," he said, allowing Ylia to hear the smirk on his face.
After more maneuvering, Ylia almost squeaked when she felt herself being lifted into the air, bridal style. Latching her arms around Kanda's neck was her first worry, holding on tight was her second, and her worries were far from choking Kanda. She just didn't want to fall.
"Stop clinging," he said as he began to walk, picking up his pace to a fast walk than their leisurely stroll just minutes ago. "I'm not going to drop you," he assured.
Ylia slowly nodded, loosening her grip by a little, just enough to allow Kanda some oxygen.
Soon or later, Kanda finally put Ylia back on her feet and started to lead her, warning her off obstacles in the road whenever there was one so she wouldn't trip and fall on him. But mostly so she wouldn't trip and hurt them both. But mostly he was worried about her safety.
Not far down the road, Kanda finally stopped, but in forgetting to tell Ylia, she bumped into his back and almost fell backwards; however Kanda caught her just in time, causing her to smile.
"Thanks," Ylia said as she was yanked into him, her head coming to rest on his shoulder. In this unintentional hug, Kanda returned to the knot at the back of her head, and careful not to pull her hair, undid it and slid the blindfold off her smooth skinned face and back to his pocket, where it belonged.
"Ready?" He asked, disregarding her gratitude.
She nodded and closed her eyes, just to further the surprise.
Kanda scoffed and moved her in front of him, and with a whisper to open her eyes, Ylia saw her surprise.
And in front of her was the scene she had played out to, not Kanda, but Allen. While Kanda was gone, the very second day of his absence, she had spun her tale to Allen, who seemed to be the only one willing to listen to Ylia's day dreams about Kanda.
Now in front of her, there it stood. A winter picnic with hot chocolate and marsh mellows under a blanket, followed by warm soup from a thermos. And even after that, ice skating. The picnic blanket was set up under the tree nearest the frozen icy lake. Ice skates, her pair, and a new pair that must've been for Kanda, were propped up against the basket, a blanket on top.
"Moyashi tracked me down last night," Kanda mumbled as Ylia just stood there in happiness induced staring shock. "He told me I should do this to make up for being gone an extra week and a half."
"Oh?" Ylia said, turning her head to Kanda but not taking her eyes off the lake.
Kanda scoffed, "I can't ice skate, but I figured it's never too late to try," He lifted Ylia back off the ground and moved her over to the blanket. After setting her down, he moved to make himself comfortable beside her.
"I can teach you," Ylia said as Kanda handed her a mug. She leaned back onto his arm, gingerly sipping at the liquid. Kanda, instead, had tea.
"Well I guess," He muttered against the rim of the glass.
Ylia smiled.
After they finished the small picnic, the snow had started falling again. And then Ylia had to put Kanda's skates on for him, since he seemed clueless otherwise. Once she let him out onto the lake, it was clear just how clueless he was when it came to skating. It had taken long enough to get out onto the lake, with Kanda falling all over the place, landing on his rear three times already. They hadn't evens started.
"Relax, Kanda," Ylia soothed, a smile on her face.
"I'm trying," He grumbled, finally letting go of Ylia's shoulders to stand up.
"There you go," she praised, pushing him a bit. "Now, it's kinda like walking, but you're on ice, ok?"
"Yeah…" Kanda said.
"Just try moving a little, you won't die if you fall down," she smiled and gave him a demonstration. When she returned to his side, she grabbed his arm and pulled him along with her, much to his dislike.
Not a second later did Kanda fall…again. He grumbled and pulled himself off the ice.
"Ylia, this is ridiculous," Kanda scoffed as she came back to him, after skating around most of the lake by the time he'd moved an inch.
"No, you just can't do it," she teased.
His shoulders tensed, "Wha—No! It's stupid!" He insisted.
Ylia giggled, "Such a kid," and she skated off.
"H-hey!" He called out, not being able to move very well.
A teasing laugh reached his ears as Ylia spun before jumping into the air, landing and doing yet another spin. He watched her in awe as she gracefully floated back to him, spinning around him on one leg, her arms spread out. After extending her arm, she grabbed his hand and pulled him along with her, skating backwards to hold his hands tightly in his, keeping him balanced.
"You're too stiff, too worried about falling," she explained with a sweet smile. "Just let go, ne?"
"Fine," Kanda sighed, giving into her whim.
And with Ylia's instruction and many falls later, Kanda finally got the hang of it. And soon he had joined Ylia, just skating though, not anything overly eccentric. He was a beginner, and felt very, very, incredibly stupid.
When he had finally pulled the girl off the ice, he sighed and flopped onto the hillside, covered in snow. Ylia laughed, flopping down beside him, curling up in his hold, her head on his chest.
"Did you at least have fun?" Ylia asked, after a brief moment of silence.
"I felt stupid," Kanda wouldn't lie about that, "but seeing you happy…" he wouldn't be caught dead finishing that sentence.
"Thanks," Ylia didn't need to hear the end of it. They had an understanding. "I'm glad you had fun."
Kanda rolled his eyes, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.
"It's tiring," he commented.
"Yeah, it is, but it's fun. Or at least I think so," She added.
"We should head back."
"Let's just watch it snow," Ylia commented, snuggling closer to the man beside her.
Kanda "hmm'd" in response. And they just laid there together, watching the snow fall, on that Christmas Eve night. A smile on Ylia's face, and a smile in Kanda's eye. They watched the snow fall.

I agree with what Koto said-- the emotion you put in here is wonderful. I still can't stop laughing from actually imagining Kanda iceskating . Would've paid money to see that!
The details you put into your stories always seem to make them come alive-- that topped with the emotions you convey from the characters. It's almost as if the reader's actually there. It's quite amazing, really
Nice job!
