Description

This was his limit.

There was nothing he could do.

He was getting sick of this, staring at the four walls of his hospital room, doing nothing. He hated that there were plenty of time to think about his previous life, swimming, his friends, and you.

The letters you wrote for him were stacked neatly on his bedside table. He would read them over and over again until your words were engraved on his mind. You would tell him stories about your life and school and how you wish he was back in Japan, sharing those memories with you. He never responded even once because if he does, then it would be a lie and he couldn’t lie to you anymore. But the letters kept coming and for that he was glad.

His hand flew to his chest, fingers clutching tightly as he tried to soothe the aching of his heart. The pain accompanying his sickness was nothing compared to the pain he felt when thoughts of you floods his mind. But it was his choice. He chose to keep this from you. He convinced his self that this was the right thing to do. He chose to save you from pain, his pain.

"She still thinks you're in Australia." Gou walked in, handing him a letter."Can you at least tell her what's going on?"

His empty laugh, much like his now empty heart, echoed through the room. Your letter for him was the same – asking how his life was, if he was eating well, if you were annoying him with your stupid letters.

“...You don’t have the right to be annoyed anyway, because I wrote this with all my heart and I’ll continue writing until you get your ass back here. So come back as soon as you can ‘cause I’ll be waiting. I love you, Rin.”

You hadn’t changed. Your love for him hadn’t changed. This time, a genuine smile was on his face. His love for you hadn’t changed either.

"Don't you want to see her before you..." Gou couldn't finish. The word was lumped in her throat.

"...die. Before I die." He finished for her. His eyes were void of emotion and his voice came out cold as he slipped the letter back in the envelope. He placed it on top of the stack and looked directly at his sister’s eyes. "Why can't you say it? The doctors said it. It'll happen eventually."

"Onii-san!"

He refused to show you this side of him, so weak, so helpless, so broken, If you were to see him in this state, he knew you would cry. Hell, you cried for a lost pet, he’s not stupid, he knows that you’ll shed tears for him too. And that was the last thing he wanted to see. He had decided long ago, the day he found out about the disease. It was your smile, not your tears, he wanted imprinted on his memory.

There was no room for argument.

His voice was calm and the lie rolled out of his tongue so smoothly.

"No. I don't want to see her."
