Description
These guys are my (first?) entries for Subjectively's Mazah Fakemon project! I really like bug Pokemon along the lines of Scizor and Golisopod (semi-humanoids) so I thought a Pokemon like that could fit well.
I am going to c/p the details I included in their reference sheet:
LOGHAST (Locust + Ghast)
About a century ago, a long flurry of colorful lights beamed into the Mazah region from the North. This strange phenomenon, which has not occurred since, has been confirmed to be caused by a migrating swarm of Loghast, nowadays a common sight in Mazah. Quiet and weak on their own, these Pokemon wander the lands looking for Bug Pokemon at the end of their lives and extract their souls to feed without fighting. When full and happy, their colorful eyes shine even brighter, creating an unsettling visage at night.
Loghast evolves into Obrogosta by using a Dusk Stone.
OBROGOSTA (Obra (artistic work in Spanish) + Langosta (Locust in Spanish) + Ghost)
Based on witness accounts, the swarm of Loghast from a century ago is said to have been led by a small group of Obrogosta. Very few Loghast evolve into this form: it is believed that a special stone causes the wandering spirits of Bug Pokemon to swarm into Loghast, causing evolution and a surge in power. These Pokemon are occasionally seen in forests across Mazah going on flashy spirit hunting sprees. Obrogosta is a controversial Pokemon, with some believing it to be able to cleanse lands of evil spirits while others argue it has the potential to be a dangerous carrier of disease.
Inspirations:
Color Television: the color-wheel type of TV was invented by a Mexican man named Guillermo Gonzalez-Camarena. The Fakemons’ RGB color scheme and its eyes in particular were inspired by the RGB pixels on TV.
Cine Mexico: during WWII Mexico emerged as a strong producer of popular film. Noir, Comedy and Musical were some of the biggest genres, with the former having strong influences from gangster films of the north. Obrogosta’s suit-like garb, oiled-back “hair”, thick antennae-mustache and eyebrows, as well as its flashy personality are all taken from popular aesthetics of this film era.
Both the invention of color TV and the beginning of Cine Mexico took place between 1939-1940. The swarm is said to have taken place about a century ago to reflect this.
Bug: The Liladownsia is a species of grasshopper that was discovered in Mexico relatively recently (2014). It is a very colorful species with relatively little known about them due to them being endangered, lending itself well to a Ghost-type Pokemon.
American Influence: The swarm from the North reflects the influence of North America and Europe on Mexico, notably in its pop culture and aesthetics… hence Obragosta being controversial among Mazians.
