I was working in my garden, pulling up weeds around the flowers, when a green anole exactly like this one came down the brick wall bordering the garden and stared at me. He was less than two feet away from me at eye level.
So I said, "Hi. What have you been up to?"
I got no response. He just clung to the wall, upside down, and watched me.
Then it occurred to me that the frequencies of my voice were probably too deep for him to hear clearly.
So I tried something different. I pursed my lips together and built up some air pressure behind them, then released the pressure through a tiny aperture at the center of my lips. What came out was a clear squeal, not too loud, but a little like what Maynard Ferguson might get out of a trumpet when he was going for a triple-high C.
The reaction of the anole surprised me.
Instantly, his throat, which had been white, started puffing out and in, like a miniature bellows, and it was deep red!
So I don't know whether he was taking my squeak as an invitation to a dominance display for possession of the territory, or whether he was answering what he took to be a mating call.
