Description Edit: 3.31.16: Did a lot of rendering on this piece and gave it a new background.

I like buddy stories. They're more enjoyable to create, I think, than just writing a solo character. Probably because life is more enjoyable when you have some good friends to live it with. Anyhow, I literally just came up with these characters this week and I knew they would stay stuck in my head until I drew them, so here they are.

I had this dream (I think it was on Monday) and it gave me an idea to create a cyborg character. But not a regular cyborg. Like, instead of just a prothetic eye, or a prosthetic limb or two, practically his entire body is synthetic. Essentially a human consciousness in a robotic body. If you're a human with a robot body, no one is going to recognize you as a sentient being with an organic mind. All they see is a cold metal shell. And that's the problem Binary faces.

While exploring the aftermath of a battle, a scientist comes across the body of a badly mutilated young soldier. He's missing limbs, his face is gone, most of his skin has been burnt off, but somehow he's still alive. To save his life, the scientist replaces most of the soldier's battered body with cybernetic prosthetics. When he wakes up, he's 15% man and 85% machine, and he can't remember who he is or anything that happened in the past. Unable to remember his real name, he goes by the nickname "Binary," which means "something composed of two different things."

Binary can't talk, so when the military drops by to forage supplies, they think he's is just a regular service robot, and confiscate him for military use. Put to work aboard a starship as a maintenance droid, Binary meets and befriends a half-human/half-Akian alien midshipman named Mokki Lovell. The two are kindred spirits. Binary is ignored by the crew who think he's just a machine. Mokki is similarly outcast, a half-breed who is accepted by neither the human nor Akian species.

Binary doesn't have a face. Just a white polymer shell with two openings for his cybernetic eyes. Consequently, he can't communicate much emotion. Hence, the whiteboard marker in Mokki's hand. They use it to draw expressions on Binary's blank face to make him more emotionally relatable (and I also imagine that Mokki probably uses it to 'stache Binary from time to time.)

Also, for full disclosure, I realize that Binary looks a lot like Sonny from I, Robot. It can't be helped. I'm not good at designing novel robots. It's going to take me a little bit more refining to come up with something unique since mechanical parts are not my specialty.
