Struck me initially as an 'anti-picture of Dorian Grey,' where his virtues accumulated on his portrait rather than his evils, and they slowly emerge in silver filigree, rather like the crystaline coating which was rapidly enveloping the world in J G Ballard's 'The Crystal World.'
