That could've been a nice plot twist, but like you said, most of that was already drawn out in the previous page. Flare would've been exactly like Psyro's in his younger days, but Flare has learned too much from Psyro in the first comic to just give in to that contract.

What if before signing the contract he stated his demands. Like for example:
Hey you, Dark thing! If you want me to sign this contract, I want to first present my demands:
1. I'm going to "rent" my soul, only for as long as the contract is up.
2. If I say the four words I am going to keep secret, the contract will be terminated immediatly.
The four words could be: "Starfire, I love you"
