Description Inspired by something I saw in the Toronto Star a while back.

Now that I look at it, I can't help but think of the song "Balloons" by the Korean group DBSK. I <3 that song. ^^

I also wasn't sure how the colours should blend with the balloons. But, I didn't have balloons in the house to see what they look like overlapping in the light. How could have I improved this?

Time: 15 min sketch, 1-2 hours inking and colouring
Done: August 4, 2006

(Constructive criticism is appreciated)

Ooh this is a very eye-catching image! I like it.
You asked for constructive criticism so I had to think it over cause there isn't that much wrong with it.
I admit I'm a painter, not a sketch artist, but here are my suggestions: I know from experience that hands are tricky as hell to draw, but the girl's hands are just a little too big for her arms and body. You should take a picture (with a cell phone if you wish) of someone grasping a line or bunch of lines like that girl and study the size and position of the hands. And as for the balloons, I'd go with the technique that a lot of illustrators of children's book use: make the balloons a little more shiny, less transparent, the overlap contours fuzzier and less visible - especially the dominating colour of any balloon seen through another balloon should be less saturated.
Now you don't have to take my advice if you don't agree or don't like it, this is just my two cents worth or whatever the expression is...
Either way, keep up the good work!

Wowee~~ thanks so much for your help!

Yes, you are right... those hands DO look too big. I have a nasty habit of drawing blobs for hands instead of actual fingers. But, I will try harder to draw them properly, and take up that suggestion and ask people to model for me.

more shiny, less see-through, fuzzier overlapping contours, and not as rich i the overlapping balloons... gotcha.
Balloons are a lot of fun to draw, so I'm expecting that I'll be practicing them. I'll try my best to incorporate your advice.

I can tell you did put a lot of thought into the comment. Thank you so much.

You're very very welcome!
I do my best to be helpful although I'm no expert...
Sometimes it is hard to look objectively on our own work. That's why I sometimes walk away from something I've been working on for like hours and go do something else for a while, even if it's just to make myself some tea and a snack. Then when I come back my eyes are fresh and I see more clearly what might be improved upon!
But hey only take my advice as just that: advice. When you're drawing go with what YOU think looks right. I'd love to see the result if you decide to edit this piece. Mind if I you? So I'll be notified if you submit the balloon edit or other good stuff! Also because you seem like a really nice and humble person - the kind I like to have on my friends list.

Oh, please do. ='.'= I'd be so honoured!

I'm afraid I'll disappoint you with my updates, though. I rarely do. But, when I do so, its about a dozen or more deviations at a time.

In terms of advice, I don't like letting any of it going to waste, as people have obviously put some thought into it. And such, I'm afraid I gave you the impression that I let it dictate how I express myself.

Allow me explain myself: I enjoy incorporating suggestions whenever I can, and seeing the results. If I like the result and see an improvement, I'll keep on using it. If it doesn't, then I can say "at least I tried". I'll admit that some advice does have more of an effect than others... but I am at an experimental stage, and thus have not really established a certain 'style', unlike some of my friends (If you check out xxxTwistedErebusxx, a very close friend of mine, her style is clearly defined).

All in all, I love advice! And I really appreciate those who give them. So thank you again for your kind words. I'll try my best!
