IMHO the skin on Todd's back is full of scars which he's got during his imprisonment.(Poor Todd! )
Originally I wasn't going to post this, but I kind of like how it turned out... so there.
(And now that I think of it, this reminds me of a scene in ch. 10 of DojoGhost's fic We Who Are About To Die [link] ...so if you want, you can view this as a fan art for that story, too.)

It's an alternate ending: After finding out the truth about Lucy, Todd leaves London and becomes a soldier in America, hoping to find death on the battlefield. Only then he realizes that he still might have a reason to live.
There's a lot of Sweenett flashbacks, epic fight scenes and stuff in that fic and the chapters are long and juicy.

That's what I thought, too. Sweeney was a completely different man as Benjamin, so he must've endured horrible things during those "fifteen years in a living hell"...
