At some point, in the Pokemon Adventures timeline, Opal was a member of Team Plasma when she was a child. Having grown up with a mother being a high-ranking member of Team Rocket, Opal believed that Team Plasma was the polar opposite, and truly believed she was helping save Pokemon. She didn't become aware of the fact that she was being exploited for evil until around the same time N came to realize it himself. Ashamed of her actions in Team Plasma, as well as afraid of the consequences, she ran away to the Kalos region. Broke, unemployed, and without reliable family, Opal resorted to stealing food to get by while living in Lumiose City
