Amaruq had never liked fire. Even small campfires he would distance himself from and refuse to come close. When Sonia had forced him to lay near a fire, he would shiver nervously and refuse to look towards the heat. He often whined at the smell of smoke. Sonia mentally kicked herself for not thinking of that when he started to whine while they were teaching little Galt to hunt in the woods. A few minutes after Amaruq started whining, Sonia smelled the woodsmoke too. Dropping the toy she had been throwing for Galt, she looked deeper into the trees. It took her a moment to see the flames, but that was long enough for the roar of the fire to become audible. She locked her boots into her snowboard and grabbed the rope secured to Amaruq's harness. Crouching down, she held her arms out to Galt. "Come here, it's okay." Uninterested in the approaching inferno, Galt pounced on his toy and shook it, wagging his little tail. Sonia let the rope drop to the thin layer of snow and locked eyes with Amaruq. "Stay" Shocking his handler, Amaruq snarled in response. Given past experience, she had expected him to whimper and stay frozen in place or bolt and gallop away from the flames. Not breaking his gaze, Amaruq paced to his son and gently picked him up by the scruff of his neck. Galt started to squirm, but Amaruq kept his jaws firmly in place and purred at Sonia. She stared at her tokotas. The tawny male who was terribly afraid of fire was taking charge of the safety of his pup and handler. Fumbling to grab the rope as Amaruq set a steady pace away from the fire, Sonia smiled at his bravery. Soon Sonia could feel blasts of heat at her back, but Amaruq didn't need any extra encouragement to speed up; they were racing a wildfire.
