it's Valerian again! As his goddess's primary spokesman and mortal-plane rep, he is responsible for being the physical vessel for her ethereal presence. Goddess and saint are meant to work together as one, two minds sharing one flesh, to best deliver Her divine judgment and lead the hordes of followers that make up their church.
Despite presenting the image of a holy and immaculate being, however, Valerian's goddess is in fact a monstrous elder god who dwells at the edges of comprehension and consciousness. She makes the effort to take on the appearance of traditionally benevolent and beautiful things, but her own power works against her in this respect. Valerian is ultimately mortal, and hosting a deity inevitably takes its toll on him--leading to disturbing, eldritch manifestations of the flesh that only vaguely resemble the illusions the two of them wish to project.
