She is the youngest of the quad with about a ten year gap between her and her youngest elder sibling. But she was never treated like the baby in her family. If anything, it was heavily implied among family that she continue to uphold a good drive in whatever she puts her mind to. All of her siblings did well for themselves in their chosen careers but did rely on each other as they grew up. Manami, though, with such a drastic gap between her and her siblings, had to rely on gut instincts alone instead of having a sibling advise her on choices in her life. And frankly, she would get jealous when her parents would praise one of her siblings, and often cling to them possessively; but her siblings understood her stance on being the youngest and having something to prove in the competitive society of Japan. So they didn't give her too much grief.

Ever since she was little she would sing- mostly nursery rhymes from her parents and preschool- and was heavily encouraged by her parents when they noticed she enjoyed it; how her face lit up when she sang. At first she simply sang around the house as she did chores, or when she took showers, or the rare family reunion. But as soon as she was old enough to join chorus in school she went for it with everything she had for her love of singing. In middle school she had a teacher who once taught in a college level setting, but had retired after many years till old age had him relaxing in a youthful environment. At first her teacher was entertained by the driven pink-haired girl. But as she continued to show progress week after week, even with him giving her more challenging pieces, he began to take her under his wing to help her strengthen and hone her range and she continues to practice every day for more improvements. And the more attention she received from her voice trainer, the more she wanted to learn. But up until then she had been classical trained and had not really been subjected to the extended music culture in Japan. But this would change as she grew into her teenage years. While she had been so dedicated to her singing, Manami missed out on making lasting friends during her childhood. This caused her to have some contrasting issues in her personality- social issues, if you will. Sometimes she would try too hard to be liked and it would come out as overly extrovert. But if she was teased in a not so good way, she would close in on herself. So often she kept to herself. She mostly talked to her voice coach, who would often recommend her to sing at clients' weddings if they approved of her voice, or other adults. One time she met an owner of a classy bar, the man thinking she was much older than she was, and he asked if she would like to sing during the peak hours. Manami jumped on the opportunity, hiding her age and getting a broader feel for stage performance while making some small cash a couple nights a week. Nothing big, but she soon found herself enjoying watching people smile when she sang. She felt more comfortable around adults than those of her own age.

But this changed when she met a group of students who had grown up together. Manami had seen them a few times, especially during elementary. Usually in class she would be quiet, listening to her classical music or another. And then one day a girl named Rei came up to her and plucked out her earbuds.

"I hear you blaring that classical stuff all the time. We need you to get out!" But she didn't mean for the girl to leave the classroom. Rei had taken out her own mp3 player and stuck the earbuds into Manami's ears. And then Manami was finally forced to pay attention pop genre. She immediately fell in love with it- the feeling of happiness and pep, of excitement. She was listening to a new idol who had come from Saotome High and produced through Shining Records. And when she finished the song, staring at Rei, the girl smiled. "I hear you singing everywhere all the time. But it just sounds so melancholy! Like... like being forced to it? You gotta relax and just feel the beat!"

Manami didn't know what that had meant, but Rei had grabbed her by the hand and pulled her to the group. She didn't even know how to react to her fellow classmates but it was music that eased the tension she felt. Every day Rei gave her CDs to borrow, telling her about all these idols she always loved, or new ones who were coming out. And the more Rei and Manami hung out, Manami becoming integrated into the group, the more Manami immersed herself into the different genres of music. She grew to admire many of the idols when she saw how dedicated they were to their art, and those she particularly admired ended up having their posters taped to the wall. And a trend grew: many of her favorite idols were Saotome High alumni.

One day she talked to her voice coach about Saotome High and he raved about the courses. He informed her how many of the teachers were working idols and the school was great for introducing students to the entertainment industry if they worked hard and showed great promise.

More words of encouragement came when she told Rei what her teacher had said. And then Rei asked:

"Manami, do you want to be an idol?"

The question caught Manami by surprise. She had never really considered it before.

"I...." Manami pauses, thinking before finally answering with a small smile. "Music... when I sing I feel like... my lyrics are my heart and my soul is my music. And... and I want to share it with the rest of the world! I love seeing how a simple song can just brighten a person's day, or move them!"

The more she expressed her feelings, the more confident she became till she realized she did want to become an idol. She had the drive, the passion, the dedication to hone her skills, and she craved to learn more. And this was her chance when she realized highschool was now just around the corner.

But when there was a will, there was a way, and both Rei and Manami grinned to each other as they thought of the same place: Saotome High. She had been hit by that spark and knew she would shine there if given the chance. So she approached her parents, showing them the school's pamphlet and telling them how much she wanted this opportunity and how she felt singing was her calling, her nitch in life. With some waiting, her parents taking the time to look at the school as well and pleased by the progress many students made, they agreed for her to attend.

And with sweet tearful goodbyes between Rei and Manami after they graduated middle school, Manami hopes she will be able to find friends who had been as supportive and kind as Rei while dedicating her all to the course. And hopefully reaching the S class.
