I am SOOOO jealous of you and your family!
The closest I've ever been to a real live Whale Shark was the last time I visited the Georgia Aquarium where they had caught, and were now raising in captivity, a total of 4 Whale Sharks. They were absolutely MAGNIFICENT!

They are filter feeders, West Australia is a good place to go swimming with them, although I've been told that due to South-East Asian fishing habits, their numbers are on the decline
