I knew when the phone rang that this was it.
When my mother nudged me gently and said
"It's time"
I turned on my side
Hoping that I could turn my back on reality,
That it would go away.
But it didn't.

As I walked up the road in my dressing gown,
I searched helplessly for a falling star
A glimmer of hope.
The one that always seemed to be there
As I wished you better.
But not tonight.

As I entered the cottage
An eerie quietness filled the room
Deathly silence.
Tears filled my eyes
As my Gran checked hopelessly for a pulse.

Every time we called the priest
And offered him his 'last rights'
He'd pull through
Bounce right back.
He affectionately called his wife 'Mam'
And I knew as we shrugged it off that day
When he asked, "Am I dying Mam?"
That it would be the last time
I'd see him alive.

Such a tough and strong woman,
I'd never seen my Gran cry.
But that night a little
Part of her died too.

I remember the good times
When I used to wheel you
Down the road on a bright Summer's evening
As the swallows gathered on the line
Over your head.
They never gather anymore,
As if they know.

I want you to know, Grandad,
That even though you're gone
You'll never be forgotten
By your only Granddaughter
