Description Not a very good tutorial tho

and sorry about the large file >_>

But yeah, this is the how I do stuff -thingy I promised I'd make. I ended up using this Imitation Len pic, because I had saved a bunch of different versions of it :3

I'll have to note tho, that I don't always paint in the same way >_>

Anyway, see here for explanation:

Like always, this picture was done in Easy PaintTool SAI and Photoshop CS2.
Painting was done in SAI and textures and other effects were done in Photoshop.
Tools used in SAI: Pen, Brush and Water in various sizes
Tools used in Photoshop: Layer effects overlay and multiply, and Levels.

All of the textures used were done by me.

1. Sketch + some basic colors.

2. Same as 1., but colors + sketch darkened with levels in Photoshop.

3. More painting done.

4. Same as 3. basicly, but this time I added blue layer set on Multiply on top of the paint layer and erased the areas I wanted to show as highlights.

5. Cleaning up... Darkened the color by duplicating the paint layer (at this point I usually have all the paint layers merged) and setting the second layer on multiply. Len thumb goes missing here >_>

6. Finishing touches... messed with the brightness in Levels, added layer and some sparkly spots all over ahaha. As you can see, there are a lot of layers on this final stage - but only a few are in use. The un-used layers are stuff I tried but that didn't look good. Like texture and stuff haha :,D

And that's about it. Not very interesting OTL

Anyway, I'll be happy to try and answer any question you might have. I made this pic a while ago tho, so I'm not sure if I remember how I did everything >_>

Thank you very much, it was helpful and made more sense now. I'll try testing with the modes to see what can i get. Yeah it looks a little complicated at first but sooner or later I've to learn it. Thanks again and have a wonderful New Year. We'll in touch

Okay i loved it, really. This is just an amazing drawing. I just have this problem with overlay and multiply because i don't know exactly how to use them....I recently learned how to use the lineart in Sai but when it comes with others tools ( and Photoshop) I messed up everything u.u....some advice or ideas for learn this? Because tutorials are usually made in yt for 3D works and photography ._.

Thank you ^^
Hmm, I'm not sure what you mean? Overlay and multiply are layer settings. You can change them in the drop menu titled Mode in SAI (it says normal by default, but when you click it you get other options). In photoshop you can change the mode in the Layers window, it's a drop menu that just says Normal in the top of it. Sorry, not sure if that was helpful at all, but if you can specify your problem a bit, I can try and give a better answer

Oh thanks for the tip(I didn't know how to search for it in SAI), but I mean, how it helps me to improve the drawing?. I don't know the exactly function of them...also this made your work more natural like the step 6? because I'm totally confused, sorry if i'm bein a pain! Otherwise, your tutorial is really good, it made the process looks easy

Ahh, I see. Hmm. I think I've seen the descriptions of each mode somewhere, but you can probably find out just by trying them out. To be honest, when I'm working on a picture, I tend to just go trough the list until I find something that looks good to me. Tho, the layer modes only work when there are other layers under the one your changing the mode to. Like in this drawing, the layer mode is changed on a layer holding a texture, and the actual paint layer is just under that and doesn't change. The layer mode used is called Overlay. It kind of makes light parts lighter and dark parts darker (tho, I guess it's not really that easy ahaha) and gives the pic this glowy look.

In any case, there isn't just one way to do digital art. And there's always control-z, so it's safe to try different things :3

Lol, unless you're fluent in Finnish, I think you'll have a better luck just searching for it on google. Multiply in SAI works the same way as it does in Photoshop, so you should find the answer by searching that. Or just try it out to see what it does~

oranges-lemons In reply to lynbaccha [2010-09-13 19:11:07 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, jaa, katsotaanpas
