Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (also known as Furyo in many European editions) is a 1983 film directed by Nagisa Oshima, produced by Jeremy Thomas and starring David Bowie, Tom Conti, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Takeshi Kitano.

What a brilliant concept! Falling in love, falling from grace and dying are all symbolised in the tumbling imagery - or that's my interpretation anyway. I like the grim expression on Yonoi's face - he's not content to be in this position, but he can't help but feel it - the slightly more serene one on Jack's face, as though he's already dead or else not that fussed, which he never was in the film, and the way their bodies form a kind of yin-yang or similar symbol of opposites. The moth on Jack's finger is a lovely touch too.
