Description

Apart from his slightly smaller body size and the high-legged, but still brawny appearance, his fur was the most prominent external characteristic of Canis lupus indicus in comparison to his northern relatives.
His multi-coloured coat pattern made him a highly adapted inhabitant of the deep tropical forests, who seemed to disappear against the background of the rainforest.
Canis lupus indicus was mostly a shy loner, spending relatively little time with conspecifics outside the mating season.

He mostly preyed on vertebrates up to the size of a hare, more rarely on animals up to the size of a deer calf. The specimens of the Southern Provinces have specialised in hunting mostly Lakonas, a species of tropical monkeys. They take the monkeys by surprise when they search the ground for fallen fruit.

Because of his extraordinary, colourful coat pattern, Canis lupus indicus was hunted excessively in past centuries and is considered extinct today.

I always wanted to do some creature concept art, so I decided to turn an experimental image into my first try of showcasing a fictional, extinct animal, both in image and text.
It also helped me testing new painting techniques. Definitely loved working on this piece!
