I see nothing wrong with the mane at all, this is a top quality interpretation of the model.
If you want some curves and do not like wet folding, you could always try some tissue-foil, but I wouldn't worry about it unless you really want to explore a different style.

This model doesn't require very thin paper. I used this wrapping paper that is as thick as printer paper, maybe thicker. I think the size is very important, use at least 40cm!

I tried to make a unicorn from a big paper but when i folded into half near the 70. step, that become a very disgusting thing... :S But I'll try this one. Can u give me a link about the diagrams in a note? :$
