They reminded me of the Ents attacking the Tower and Tolkien was certainly inspired by nature.

We are at the northern limit for this species in France and there are a lot around the Bourget lake due to the micro-climate it provides.

I have no idea why it grows in that nature reserve in Poland, especially because it's in the north of the country.

No idea. Maybe it's the relic of old times when there was more warm. After all, in Medieval Ages
there were vineyards in Greenland.
