Pumpkinseed or Common SunfishLepomis gibbosusThe pumpkinseed's natural range in North America is from New Brunswick down the east coast to South Carolina.The brightly colored gill plates of the pumpkinseed sunfish also serve as a method of protection and dominance.
In France it is considered an undirable invasif species. it was inroduced as an aquarium fish in 1886.

Yes, that's why they were sold as aquarium fish. They proliferate in our lake and they have a voracious appetite. Fishermen don't like them at all.
