Hey folks.

I haven't done a portrait in a long time but I thought I'd give it a try. Technically this is second in a series of paintings of people from an amateur reference (like a rough digital source).

This piece was done entirely in Photoshop CS2.

I first painted a black and white underpainting here:

Then, I used an Overlay layer to get in the basic local hues I wanted. Finally, I switched to LAB mode and used a Normal layer for the more opaque painting.

I got the LAB mode idea from the new Conceptart.org movie by noxizmad (Bruno Gore). It's probably the coolest thing I've learned to do for digital painting in a long time. nox ftw!!!
