At last, a new episode! I started drawing this weeks ago but was putting it off since I had no idea what dress to draw Oriana in- That's literally the only reason. But finally, after many months, Oriana is back to being the main character~ This one takes place at the same time as Episode 4A!

Synopsis: "Star leaves Oriana in charge of the castle for a day."
Characters appearing: Oriana Butterfly, Alfer Reynfrey, Star Butterfly, Epsilon Butterfly

Previous:Β Daughter of Spades
Next:Β What Lies Beneath

Episode Overview
Oriana yawned as she made her way back to the castle, the still-rising sun that shone through the trees creating splotches of light on the pavement. Despite it not even being 10 in the morning yet, Oriana already had a busy morning behind her. With it being Mimosa's 3rd birthday today, she couldn't NOT go see the princess, but her mother had also asked her to discuss something before 11, so she had no choice but to get up early and get it over with. While Rigel had been with her a bit earlier, he apparently also had "places to be", as he put it. What that meant, she had absolutely no clue. Oriana stretched her arms in an attempt to appear at least a little bit awake, and carefully pushed open the heavy castle doors. "Oh, there you are! Ori, over here!", Oriana looked up into the living room, seeing her mom wave her over. "What'd you need me for? Especially this early...?", she mumbled the last part. "Well, you see...", Star folded her hands together, a big grin on her face. Oriana mentally wished herself luck, that look was never good news. "So, basically, your dad and I have decided to take a trip to the other side of Mewnearth today and since there's nobody else to watch the castle, we want you to do it!", Star explained at a tempo that was difficult to keep up with. Oriana blinked a few times, processing what she'd just heard. "You... You want me to take over YOUR duties for today?!", she finally managed to reply, to which Star just nodded eagerly. Very eagerly.

"It'll be good practice!"
"Mom! I'm 14! You can't expect me to run a castle!"
"I was Queen at 15 myself, you'll be fine! Besides, it's not like there's anyone else who can do it."
"There's TWO Queens, you know!"
"Eclipsa has Mimosa's birthday to celebrate, and Meteora was invited for some kind of... fancy-schmancy lunch thing. Plus, Rigel has ran off somewhere and you can't expect me to leave the castle to the 11 year old, now can you?"
"...Fine, I'll do it, but you better give me a proper rundown of what I'm supposed to do!"

Oriana stared blankly at the list her mother had left her with, fiddling with the batch of keys that was left alongside it. As expected, she'd ran composed a crudely written list (that was barely legible) with several, very mundane-looking tasks that had to be completed for the day. "Really...? All I have to do is wander around the castle and check if there's no problems...?", she mumbled to herself. She stood up from the couch, making her way to her room while thinking of what to do first, when she noticed her reflection in one of the windows. "Oops, ofcourse! Need to get changed into something proper!", she noted outloud to herself before rushing into her room and pulling open the large wardrobe. She stood there, arms crossed, for a while, contemplating which outfit would be the best fit, when she noticed the big, blue royal dress she'd gotten for her 14th birthday, right after she got back from sulking on the roof for a bit. She'd only put it on once before, just to see if it'd fit. 'For special royal-duty occasions only!', her mother had exclaimed, proudly, even if Oriana had absolutely no idea what a 'special royal-duty occassion' entailed. But thinking about it now, this seemed to be a very 'special royal-duty occassion'. She pulled the dress out of the wardrobe, surprised by how heavy it actually was. "I have to wear this all day, huh...?", she sighed, once again wishing herself luck.

After a good 15 minutes, Oriana had managed to put the dress on properly, thankful it reached past her feet so she didn't have to wear heels underneath. It was the proper thing to do, but Oriana was not looking forward to walking around in heels all day. She walked around her room for a bit, trying to get used to the long fabric so she wouldn't trip over it and accidentally tear it. Once she felt confident enough, Oriana returned to the empty living room to decide her course of action for the day. However, her peace and quiet was quickly disturbed by Epsilon entering the room, who looked like he'd just woken up, which was likely true.

"Epsilon! It's nearly 12 and you've only just woken up?!"
"You could tell?"
"You look like a walking corpse."

Epsilon replied with a deadpan "Oh", as he headed for the kitchen, probably to get something to eat. Oriana heard some clattering in the kitchen, and Epsilon returned moments later with a bowl of cereal for which he probably had to climb onto the counter to get because their parents kept the cereal boxes in the upper cupboard. Epsilon looked her up and down, blinking slowly before speaking. "Why do you look like a walking cotton candy?". Oriana gave him a look and crossed her arms. "Mom left me in charge of her duties today since she's on the other side of Mewnearth right now, apparently.", she explained, Epsilon tilting his head slightly. "But Eclipsa's Queen aswell?", he mumbled, making it sound more like a question than a statement. "It's Mimosa's birthday, so she's too busy.", Oriana replied, and slightly jumped when her brother suddenly bolted up. "...I forgot.", he deadpanned, before nearly inhaling the cereal and running off to the kitchen to put away the bowl. "You better put that in the dishwasher, not the sink!", Oriana yelled after him, to which he yelled back something about 'having manners'. She didn't even get the chance to say anything else as he pretty much flew into the hallways, coming back a little bit later with a large box. "I have to go now, I promised Eclipsa I would come over.", he hurriedly explained, giving her a brief wave before he was out of the door. Oriana could only sit there, surprised. Moments later, the front door opened again. "Epsilon! Make up your mi-", Oriana was cut off as she noticed the person entering the room was in fact NOT Epsilon, but Mewnearth's current chamption-in-training, Alfer, who waved at her. "Oh, sorry, I thought you were Epsilon...", Oriana laughed sheepishly. Alfer waved her off as he chuckled. "I came to give you a hand today.", he explained. "My mentor has the day off today aswell, so I felt it'd be a good idea to help you out." Oriana smiled at him. "I appreciate that."

"That's all we have to do? Just check if there's no problems?", Alfer asked, looking around the huge laundry room. "According to my mom's very unclear list, yes.", Oriana sighed, watching the knights of wash carrying out their duties, which mostly consisted of actually carrying laundry. Oriana made some brief conversation with the head knight, as Alfer watched from a distance. "Alright, keep up the good job.", Oriana ended the conversation and turned back to Alfer. "I guess that's the gist of it...", she shrugged. "Oh, Queen Oriana!", Oriana briefly cringed at the new title, but composed herself before turning to the person who called out to her, a female knight waving her over. "It seems we are running low on detergent.", she explained, and Oriana nodded. "Alright, I'll inform the delivery staff about it." The knight thanked her, and Oriana waved as she and Alfer left the room.

Oriana checked off the second to last bulletpoint on the to-do list and tapped her pen on the last one. "Alright, one more thing to do, mom wants me to retrieve a document from the Royal Archives." "I'm surprised it actually took us this long to get through the whole list.", Alfer pointed out. "Well, the castle is big. Especially if you have to check every single important room.", Oriana laughed, though listlessly. "Either way, lets get going! The door to the archives are is in mom's office.", Oriana recalled as she sped up her walking pace, wanting to be done already. Arriving at her mom's office, Oriana unlocked the door and stepped in, not having been inside this room very often. "Lets see... It should be... right here!", Oriana exclaimed, pulling open a desk drawer and pressing the switch that was neatly hidden inside of it, causing a large bookcase to rumble and slightly move aside, opening a small pathway into the archives. "How'd you know that?", Alfer asked, and Oriana shrugged. "Mom showed me once on a whim."

Watching her step carefully in the dark corridor, Oriana and Alfer finally arrived at the Royal Archives. Oriana looked around in awe. "Woaaah... It's much bigger than I expected it to be...", she nearly whispered, as if speaking out loud was forbidden like it was a library. "Well, lets see, it should be placed under the letter T," "That's right over there.", Alfer pointed at the far end of one of the open areas, a large, golden letter T sparkling in the lamplight. Oriana approached the huge bookshelves, rolling the ladder that was attached to the top shelf to the far left. "Oh, I'll get that for you.", Alfer offered, taking the list from her. "I can handle that just fine, you know!", Oriana laughed, as Alfer waved dismissively. "If I let you get hurt, I'd never hear the end of it!"

While Alfer was busy looking for the document, Oriana wandered off to the surrounding shelves, all categorized alphabetically. "Must've been a lot of work...", she mumbled outloud to herself, running her fingers over the book covers. In the corner of her eye, she spotted one book that was sticking out of the shelf, but was surprised as she touched it to push it back in. It was cold to the touch, like it was made of metal, and no matter how hard she tried, it wouldn't go back in. "Weird...", she wondered, instead trying to pull it out. It gave away slightly, and a faint but audible click echoed through the room. Alfer, who had just descended down the ladder with the correct document, turned to look at her questioningly. "What was that?" Oriana jumped up and quickly pushed the book back into it's former position. "I think I just activated something.", she gasped, the same sound as before resounding. "Lets leave that alone, shall we?", Alfer said worryingly, as he pulled her toward the exit with him. Oriana nodded, but quickly turned back to see the exact spot she'd been in. Letter R, shelf 5, row 3 from the bottom up.

After having said her goodbyes to Alfer, Oriana slumped down onto her bed, happy to finally be able to wear something casual again. Yet, once again, she was disturbed moments later again by a knock on her door. Oriana dragged herself from her bed and opened her door, coming face to face with Epsilon once more. "Hey, what'cha need.", she asked, noticing how he looked slightly worried. He was quiet for a moment, as if trying to form words.

"There's... something I wanna discuss with you."
