Description A portrait of a woman in gold and blue ancient dress in Ur, Mesopotamia. She is named in this image after the Mesopotamian 'queen' Hama ["queen" is used in inverted commas since queens were not the equals of kings, more like women of the palace]. The name "Hama" has been attributed to nobody else of the period and it's possible it was a nickname of sorts, in which case her real name is uncertain. She was excavated in the 1980s and identified as recently as 2017.

Very little is known about Hama, and any knowledge is a result of excavations only from the palace of Nimrud. This is clearly a romanticised AI version which I have attributed to her. Unfortunately her coffin was destroyed in 2015 by Islamic State fighters, and the whereabouts and status of her bones are uncertain. She was buried along with some of the most incredible treasures of the time: golden crowns, genies, flowers, gems and a large assortment of jewellery.

When found, around her neck hung a pendant with the words, "belonging to Hama, queen of Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, daughter-in-law of Adad-nirari."
