If the show had gone this way I think it would have made more sense. If Twilight had been Luna's student instead of Celestia's, she may have tried to have friends before moving to Ponyvile.

And if Luna had really thought about it back then, more ponies enjoy the night than the day: during the day all they do is labor and complain about how hot it is, while at night they may not stay up and enjoy it as much as she wants, but its the time ponies use to relax and unwined from the labors of the day(and eventually the sun will either go supernova or grow to the point that Equestria will become lifeless from the heat.)
