Description
The character Orion the Absol. For once, this is a painting I did on my own instead of being commissioned work. It was modeled after a pencil drawing I did not too long ago. To be honest, the lighting and shading threw me off. I also hate having to constantly rely on a gaussian blur to make my shading blend more appropriately.For Stray, a mature-rated story for the Pokémon fandom.

STORY SYNOPSIS
A decade-long war raged across the continent of Hevalkin, a land of Civilized Pokémon attempting to live like their predecessors: the long deceased humankind. The villages and cities of Hevalkin formed a pact known as the Peacekeeper Alliance, with the sole purpose of keeping invaders away. Across the sea is the continent of Serapía, ruled by a kingdom of war-hungry dragons who desired sovereignty over the world. Amidst the two continents, a terrible threat emerged: the Shadow Pokémon, who were by far the most violent, mysterious and unpredictable adversaries. The three factions clashed, turning Hevalkin into a ruin. And the Peacekeeper Alliance grew desperate as it sought after unlikely allies to aid the war effort: infamous mercenaries, assassins, former outlaws and even the Uncivilized Pokémon.
Among them is a young Absol named Orion, a wanderer with no place to call home. Rumor has it that the appearance of a certain Absol on the battlefield would curse the Peacekeepers and give the Shadow Pokémon an advantage. Forced to confront death time and time again, Orion was made witness to the war's atrocities as he learns the horrifying truth behind the forces that would change the world forever.

It's a nice drawing. A little tip: For better blending of the colors try to use brushes with different hardnesses and opacity. I know it's hard in the beginning, but I'm sure you'll improve even more!

Haha! I love Absol. Love the line work, but I will note that the shading is inconsistent. My tip is to have a single focal point for the light source at first and as you improve, which you will, you can play around with lights coming from everywhere!

Yes, this is one of the things troubling me while I painted that. I'm trying to make the light point towards his right side. But then I scratched my head at how to make the shading and highlights look more three-dimensional, so I did whatever I could with that. The horn and the face are probably the most noticeable in regards to inconsistency.

I am a bit iffy on Mega evolutions, including Absol's. It has wings (or extensions of the mane), though it's still not classified as a Flying type. If it's just for aesthetic value, they really have no purpose. Making Absol a Flying type would actually be beneficial, as it would make its current weaknesses neutral in exchange for weaknesses that it has a better chance of countering (as well as insurance from Earthquake).
I also feel that the larger horn seems like an impractical design, as it looks heavy and has shorter range of attack. It can probably work like an axe as opposed to a scythe, but still. And the smaller horn... serves no purpose other than aesthetics.
That's just my problem in general with the Mega evolutions. The designs look more aesthetic than practical. It's basically the same thing with Dragon Ball Z and Super Saiyans. What's different? Hair turns blonde, grows longer and stands out, and... an increase of power level (sometimes, increase in muscle mass).

It really is. The only reason they brought in the Fairy type because they felt the Dragon type is too powerful. A legit reason, yet a rather lame solution. Putting Mega evolutions into the metagame (especially for the already overused Pokémon in competitive) only further unbalances competition, which goes against the reason why they added the Fairy type in the first place: to balance out the competition. People complained that GEN V was a big hit-and-miss, but GEN VI looks like it's taking more risks than any previous GEN.
