Description I was originally going to call this something nifty like Hall of the Mountain King, but after 72 hours of staring at it, I decided I'd save the name for something that irritated me a bit less.

Yes, this took 72 hours. It didn't even make it to 50% - I finally said enough was enough and cropped the bottom half off in Photoshop CS4, tweaked curves a hair and ended up with this.

Long story short, either Vue HATES my computer, or I have some settings WAAAAAAY off. Now, my computer isn't a bad one, but holy cow, rendering this took long enough I'm starting to wonder. Time to see if I can figure out what on earth is going on!

(Still, I don't think it's half bad for a first try in Vue 7!)

Not bad for a first Vue attempt, I can't say mine was much better (though Vue 7 Pro Studio was more limited e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Wink/Razz" />) the scene has a good sense of scale and depth mainly due to the background e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

"Spikey terrains" are a common problem in Early Vue attempts, while some fantasy and sci-fi scenes benifit from it, usually one has to try and ensure their terrain's spikes aren't too steep and pointy for a regular landscape, ona standard terrain you can try clipping off the very peaks using the altitudes filter, in procedural terrains just reduce the "roughness" of the function e.deviantart.net/emoticons/i/i… " width="15" height="32" alt="" title="Idea" />

The atmosphere is well detailed but a bit repetitive, I would have added some stretched out and darker straus clouds or something in the lower altitudes to make the sky more natural looking and varied. You could possibly even have some clouds hanging just over the peak of the mountain for a more dramatic effect too! The use of Godrays is nicely done though e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

So I wanted to try and apply your advice before responding, because it's excellent advice, and didn't want to come back with questions having not tried to apply the advice given. So THANK YOU for taking the time to give it! It has helped a LOT. I still feel like a total newbie though!

I've been playing with procedural terrains, as a result of your suggestion, and like those a LOT better than the infinite one used here. Render times are still really long, even on Broadcast, but the level of control with fractals and functions and such make getting the right terrain SO much easier. Yay!

Definitely agree on the repetitive atmosphere, the more I look at it, the more it bugs me. Originally (no idea how...) had a cloud right around the peak, but it disappeared on me and I could never get it back. I love the idea though, and did love the extra focus on the mountain peak, wonderful suggestion on that one too. I just wish I knew how to control the clouds and their interaction with things a bit better. It feels like mostly luck when it comes to getting what I'm after, so gets a bit frustrating.

Godrays... hehe, thank you! I wish I knew how to control where they landed. Just a matter of moving the terrain? Newbie questions, eek.

I keep referencing this critique whenever I get a chance to load up Vue, and I'm REALLY sorry it took so long to respond. It's been a tremendous help in knowing what to look for. I'm still trying to come up with something worth posting from Vue, but can't get one thing I'm even close to happy with for a final image. Will keep trying! Hopefully one of these days will have something worth submitting to #VuePort!

Thank you SO much again!!

not bad at all !

there are 2 things that itches me. the repetition of clouds that is a bit too high, and there is one touch that would drastically give you a peek of quality;
try to put some HDR lightning behind the mountain. A nice lightning that would blend the mountain with the background.

elseway, the details in the mountains are very nice. I love spiky terrains !

Have to agree, the clouds bug me the more I look at them too. :\

Will look into HDR lighting, thank you for the tip!

Yup, you've got some settings amiss there if it takes that long. Go with Broadcast quality rendering for most things. If you're using Global Radiosity lighting, you can tweak down the quality slider by about -0.4 without affecting the quality on outdoor scenes.

Terrain is a bit spiky (tweak down the Roughness parameter by a very small amount). The lower layer of cloud is a bit too flat at the bottom - increase Uniformity to round it out.

Good colour and some nice lighting effects!

Thank you!!

I've been using GR - will try to drop the quality a bit next time I get a chance to load up Vue, thank you for the suggestion!

Increase uniformity? Man, I was going in the wrong direction entirely. *headdesk* Will give that a shot too, thanks!

Oh, try everything and anything! The more you try the more you get an idea of what something will do. It's all good!

It looks really good for how far you got with it. Good luck with Vue. I've seen others having similar frustrations with it

Thank you very much! It's more fun than frustrating right now, thank heavens! (Hoping it stays that way too!)
