Ok guys! I'm going to discuss the parts of this costume! I'm hoping to upload some more detailed tutorials onto my ubercaledor deviantart, but just an overview!~

So, for starters, the inner-most layers are a pair of trousers and a cross-over jerkin. The trims of the jerkin and the pants are from cotton (navy) and the same is used to make the two-half-fingered gloves.

The pattern of the jerkin was based off my Kendo Keikogi, and is made of patterned polyester. The skirt part and the shirt part of the jerkin are two separate bits, with a belt of the navy material covering the joint. The fur trim is a tube of 2" pile white fur.

Next comes the "chaps" which are made of sky-blue polycotton with a white bias-tape trim and chainmail. The chainmail was made following a technicque I found on the internet using plastic binding coils, when I do my tute I'll linky it!

With the capelet/leather pauldrons, I made them out of navy suede and trimmed again in the white fur. To reduce the seam-lines in the suede, the edges were folded under using foam-mounting tape .The symbols on the shoulders were made from "sculptamold" and painted, the one on the chest was sculpted out of hot glue and then painted! Wierd I know but it worked really well!! The silver bit was rub-and-buff.

The boots are straight blue vinyl bootcovers. I'm also wearing a choker that was assembled from 16 shapes based on a square-faceted jewel cast from a cardboard mould from scultamold, painted and then hot-glued to a thick ribbon and held by eyelets.

The boomerang case and scabbard with their associated belts were made from two-tones of soft pleather to fit their associated items and then buckles were used to hold them in place. The scabbard was then adorned with a plate on the front and a cap on the end using craft foam sprayed gold to match the sword-hilt which Chryso so nicely made for me (check out the sword in other images, it is sooo awesome!!).

the arm-strapping is leukoplast adherent bandages which I later had to tear off my arms to much lost skin! next time might do that differently!!

All the remaining armour plates are craft foam shaped with heat and then painted black and silver over the top, then cotton straps were used to tie them on. The ties were held on with hot glue, but they came away from the foam throughout the day and were repaired with hollywood tape .

That's about it! I am wearing very subtle blue colour-contacts and my hair was cut up the back/sides to about 1.5" and tied back. I DID grow my hair out for this one, so hopefully I won't be swapping between this and a short-hair cos too quickly!!!

That's all I've got at the moment, for the shield and helmet and boomerang... I'll save that for another image that shows them! But for now- Enjoy! And please ask any questions! More details and possibly tutorials to follow!!!

Thanks for viewing!

How long did it take you to make this? Not including the boomerang case and scabbard. How did your friend create the sword? I'm planning on making a sokka costume, but if I can't make it in time for this party, I'll probably do something else.

um... it depends on how fast you work, I took a few months, but I didn't work non-stop. I could probably make another in a couple of weeks? But a lot of the time is spent in the planning. I can answer questions about specific bits and pieces if you like. I don't know how quickly you work, so it's hard to give a time estimate.

Hi, I'm the friend who made the sword. It's cut from mdf board (I think it was 9mm thick), detailed with cardboard and polly filler, spray painted and wrapped. If you click on this [link] and keep pressing -> you can see the construction process. Feel free to ask specific questions if something isn't clear. It took me a day to cut and sculpt, the longest was setback was painting took me several days because of the specific look I wanted (the black blade glinted in different ways to give it the impression of being three-dimensional)

I really love the chainmail - it's almost subtle or something; can't really articulate what's on my mind when seeing this; but yeah, that just stuck out to me and felt almost like nodding "yeah, that makes so much sense!" Kudos!

Haha! *Nods enthusiastically* That's it!

It was a little thing, but took me soooo long to do.
But you're right. I think it makes sense. That's why it had to be done.

I'm so glad you like it! I try to put tiny details into things, mainly for my own amusement, I think to myself... "The animators obviously would have simplified this, so how can I make it less simplistic?"

But yes. Subtle. Exactly the word I would want to hear!

YOU WERE SUCH AN AMAZING SOKKA!! Your outfit blew me away! I feel like so many people overlook Sokka as the comic relief character but your costume is so detailed you just have to take it seriously. "GO BOOMERANG" That was hilarious. I'm pretty sure we all thought of the Captain Planet opening after watching about the millionth episode of ATLA.

I can't believe you made all that chainmail.... that's amazing! I hope you post the link soon!

For the sword, how did you make that little metallic circle on the bottom?

os-cordis In reply to Meketaten [2011-04-23 06:40:30 +0000 UTC]

erm, Chryso did, she did it with a round bit of wood and some thin card for the pattern.

Yeah, the chainmail... that took me hours

here's the link in the meantime

Oops I'm jumping in here about the sword, cause that was my baby.. number two (after the glider). I'll be posting a separate photo and discussion of the sword for more details. But here are a few shots - [link] [link] [link]

Essentially, the circle itself is a disc of mdf (particle board) which I cut and sanded down. The white lotus tile is just cardboard cut out and stuck on. The piece was hammered in with a nail (I should have used two) to attach it to the handle. The whole pommel was then sprayed in "liquid gold" spray paint

This is all so amazing. How do you cut this stuff out of wood so neatly? Do you have a scroll saw?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chrysocome In reply to Meketaten [2011-04-25 05:17:47 +0000 UTC]

Uh, you know a scroll saw would be a great investment! All I had was a jig saw and hours and hours of sanding by hand cause I don't have an electric sander. I don't remember it clearly, because I'd black out about an hour into the sanding, and then I'd wake up and it's been done and then there are all these bodies....

I love that you're wearing real chain mail. Very cool! You did such a great job! I'm trying to work on my Katara cosplay and I want to know how you did your arm armor. What did you use?

You might be interested in reading forever-girl's post on how she did Katara armour here - [link] - it was very solid and shiny like metal.

For my arm armour I used craft foam, I cut out roughly to size, and then used my stovetop to curl it a little. After that I trimmed the shape again, then did a base-coat of black spray paint and then with silver spraypaint. Now, I hear you can seal them with floorwax (Finish floorwax/surfacer) which will harden it in a few coats, and stop the paint rubbing off. Unfortunately I didn't have time, so I had paint all over the place.

For the bands, they're just black cotton tied off and attached with hot glue. Again, these started coming apart by the end of the day, so I'd probably do it differently (stitching on or something) if I were to do it again, I'll post up a full overview in the next day or so!

Sounds like you'll get an awesome Katara, stay tuned for our Katara costume, she's done the armour slightly differently (and some might say better!)

I was so nervous about the chainmail until it all came together, I wasn't sure it would look right, because it's not technically true to the images. But I liked it too much to leave off! :3
