Perhaps this is why these guys went extinct. They were so proud of their huge heads they forget to take their small torsos into consideration when trying to swallow large fish.

Yeah.Β I think we're about to see a pterosaur choke to death because his eyes were bigger than his stomach.

The implication is that the animal will choke to death, this is based on Darren Naish's articles on animals that try to eat things that are too big or the wrong shape. Such as "Seagull attempts to swallow starfish, dies" etc.

Here is stuff written by Witton that discusses pterosaurs vs humans, and on the potential of pterosaurs being able to swallow humans:

And note this was written before it was found there were robust, heavy-jawed azhdarchids like this guy or (shudder) Hatzegopteryx.

Boverisuchus In reply to acepredator [2017-10-02 09:29:18 +0000 UTC]
Yes, but a giant pterosaur such as Hatzegopteryx has a head much longer and larger than a man, as would the largest Quetzalcoatlus. This fish is a good deal longer than the animal's head, and is very thick, more to the point, it is far FAR larger than the animal's torso. A swallowed human would curl up rather nicely in the torso of the largest pterosaurs, but this is a solid column of armored fish that will not fit by any means. As I said, you are misinterpreting the evidence, "can swallow human" does not equal "can swallow anything".

Osmatar In reply to acepredator [2017-10-02 07:08:33 +0000 UTC]
For a really big Azhdarchid like Quetzalcoatlus or Hatzegopteryx a human is just a small animal. Humans would not be even the length of it's bill, let alone whole skull. And if you are extrapolating based on the Rhamphorhynchus specimen, even a prey animal that occupied 100% of the trunk length would be tiny in comparison to a fish that is literally as long as the pterosaur itself from jaw tip to tail.
