I hope so too... They're selling chicken in Australia and in Mexico from what I hear... so it should be too much longer. I hope.

Will Applebloom get a magnetic bow?

And LOL, Scootaloo sets are popping up everywhere where I live (in Australia). I expect for her to turn up in America in the New Year at least I can't wait to see more progress!

Nice! you're on form. Especially after all those projects that dont involve sculpting heh

OtakuSquirrel In reply to azurevine [2011-12-17 07:19:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it can be a bit difficult getting back into the sculpting after doing other stuff for a couple weeks...

I did do a recent sculpt that I haven't posted pictures of... it was part of a holiday pony swap. I'm dying to post the pics, but until I know that the recipient has actually gotten their pony, I can't post pictures!!! It's driving me a bit crazy!!!

azurevine In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2011-12-17 07:30:21 +0000 UTC]

Haha is that considered common etiquette for commissions/swaps, or was it a specific request?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to azurevine [2011-12-17 07:37:34 +0000 UTC]

Well, the ponies being swapped are all customs... when we signed up for this, we filled in a form with a whole bunch of questions, and then it's done as a round-robin as to who makes a pony for who. So I get the answers given by the person I was making the pony for-- to figure out what I wanted to make... but that person isn't the one who made my pony that I'm getting. Anyway, everything is supposed to be a surprise until they get their pony. It's the first swap that I've actually done... so I'm not sure what to expect.

haha cool sounds like fun. Do they have to approve the quality of your work before they let you sign up?? haha. Hope you get something badass, post it when you get it!

OtakuSquirrel In reply to azurevine [2011-12-17 08:19:45 +0000 UTC]

Sort of. This swap was a newbie swap... so no prior experience was really necessary. To participate in the "real" holiday swap, you needed to have something like 5 newbie swaps under your belt, or a portfolio of super awesome ponies... and because I'm a lazy bugger, I opted to just join the newbies.

OtakuSquirrel In reply to AleximusPrime [2011-12-17 05:34:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Sweetie's hair is a lot more fun to sculpt than Apple Bloom's is... (Sorry AB fans! The curly bits are just so much fun!)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AleximusPrime In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2011-12-17 05:54:20 +0000 UTC]

To do Sweetie Belle's did you just take little points and swirl them around?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to AleximusPrime [2011-12-17 06:10:20 +0000 UTC]

Yup... but I have to do it a bunch because they come out too thick, too thin, too this, too that... so it's a lot of swirling around little clay worms and twirling them up on themselves like centipedes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AleximusPrime In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2011-12-17 06:23:06 +0000 UTC]

Do you find yourself carving them a bit with the exacto from time to time too?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to AleximusPrime [2011-12-17 06:27:24 +0000 UTC]

For the moment I'm trying to focus on getting the basic shapes about right, and then getting it baked... once I have that done, I'm very much going to be doing the fine tuning with my trusty x-acto knife-- both by carving and helping fill-in/shape spots that need more material.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AleximusPrime In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2011-12-17 07:09:25 +0000 UTC]

Oh, you bake and THEN you carve?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to AleximusPrime [2011-12-17 07:16:59 +0000 UTC]

and bake and carve and fill in low spots and bake again and repeat.....

I usually bake a sculpt about a dozen times-- refining and adding to my work each time. I think my lowest number of bakes for any of my sculpts was seven times.

OtakuSquirrel In reply to AleximusPrime [2011-12-17 07:50:09 +0000 UTC]

LOL! I take my ponies seriously! There's a reason my sculpts take me as long as they do and are a good as they are.

OtakuSquirrel In reply to AleximusPrime [2011-12-17 07:59:18 +0000 UTC]

LOL! Well, a lot of this developed from having a fairly bad summer at work (being transferred out of my normal area and several bad interactions with coworkers...) So this is how I channeled all that bad energy into something positive.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AleximusPrime In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2011-12-17 08:02:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I didn't have ANY work last summer so I guess all my artwork makes up for it. Hopefully I can get an internship next summer for experience and some pay, but I hope I still have some time for art...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to AleximusPrime [2011-12-17 08:05:11 +0000 UTC]

There's always time for art! Not always time for sleep though... which doesn't work well when you have to be at work at 8AM the next day... But hey, why not!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AleximusPrime In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2011-12-17 08:10:12 +0000 UTC]

How late do you stay up?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to AleximusPrime [2011-12-17 08:15:47 +0000 UTC]

Depends on when I'm supposed to be at work-- because I work for a parks department, most of my shifts are based off of sunset... to some degree. During the summer, I got off work anywhere between 1030 and 1130PM... so I was usually up until 4AM working on ponies. These days I'm off work around 630 on most days, so midnight or 1AM tops. Unless I have the next day off, in which case it's until my eyes go derpy and I can't work any more.

So cute! Is Apple Bloom going to have a detachable bow?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to valleyviolet [2011-12-17 05:20:53 +0000 UTC]

I haven't really decided about that yet. It makes sense because it would be a paint to mold her bow and mane together... So I guess I have to figure out how to attach them (not sure if the magnet will work in this case...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

valleyviolet In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2011-12-17 07:02:21 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmm... So the metal-in-mane trick won't work here?

If it's a case where you think most people will want to attach the two at all times, you could just go for a hole in the mane and a peg on the bow and have people glue it in once it was painted. I'm a fan of rectangular pegs, since then they have to line up evenly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to valleyviolet [2011-12-17 07:15:06 +0000 UTC]

Unless the bow has enough room to hide the magnet, the metal in her mane trick wont work the best... although it would be pretty awesome if it did because then AJ and AB could swap accessories!

But yeah, if I can't get the magnet trick to work, I think most people will want the bow attached-- It's not like she takes it off very much. Once I get the sculpt closer to finished, it should hopefully be a bit more obvious as to how to best attach it.

valleyviolet In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2011-12-17 14:36:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh man... she'd be totally adorable in an AJ hat. Hopefully the size of the pieces will allow for that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to valleyviolet [2011-12-18 00:20:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, if it turns out that attaching her bow with a magnet wont work, I can always put metal in her mane for the hat anyway!
