Description And here we have a plethora of pony parts. I got two large orders this last week, and I've spent the last two nights casting as many pony pieces as I could. There's enough parts in this pile for 37 ponies. 34 of them already have homes.

I'm pretty much casting these on demand. I was slowly trying to build some back-stock, but it just hasn't been working all that well... Especially Rarity, she's my best seller. I thought Fluttershy might give her a run for her money, but no, it's still all about Rarity...

I use a two part silicone rubber mixture- when mixed together they solidify.  I make my sculpts and pour the liquid over them.  After this I cut them out and then refill them with liquid resin to create the casts.  This is really a big simplification of the whole process- it takes a lot of careful work to make everything happen properly- and I'm still something of an amateur at it myself.  My pictures in my molds and casting subfolder are worth a lot more than any of my prattle is.

I'm wanting to make a few of these with the sculpted mane, but I'm not sure of how I should do it. Have any tips, or maybe a mini how-to? Thanks, and I hope you complete all your ponies.

Those white parts look like they were hardened into plastic.

OtakuSquirrel In reply to SirClrwaterMK2 [2012-03-10 08:25:02 +0000 UTC]

They are plastic-- I make molds of my sculpts and then cast lots and lots of copies.

What did you use that hardens to plastic?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to SirClrwaterMK2 [2012-03-10 16:03:47 +0000 UTC]

It's a two part polyurethane casting resin-- so I take one part of part A, add one part of part B, stir is up, and pour the resulting liquid into the molds. An hour later I've got fully cured plastic pieces.

Thanks for the tip,I was thinking of making some parts for some model HO trains & RC model boats that were hardened into plastic.

wait...so do you make the pony bodies too? Or you repaint them? hnm..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to hikari2314 [2012-02-15 05:28:48 +0000 UTC]

No, not the bodies. Those are just the brushable ponies with the doll hair removed. I've repainted a couple, but usually I try to work with characters that pre-exist as toys.

OtakuSquirrel In reply to MidoriCChann [2011-11-18 04:38:07 +0000 UTC]

I make them. I've make silicone molds for my clay sculpts, and then use a two part liquid resin to cast copies.

Yeah, I didn't really expect the project to end up going this direction like it did, but I guess I'm just riding it out to see where it goes... In the meantime, my poor kitchen and dining room look like a laboratory!

This is amazing, I may have to get some since I love doing crafts like this. What material are they made from?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to SouthParkTaoist [2011-11-11 05:19:09 +0000 UTC]

The pieces that I'm selling are polyurethane resin. It's a two part resin that gets mixed in a 1 to 1 ratio.

I love your ideas! I am mind-blown on how you manage to do this...the concept of the finer details is just beyond my reach...i would actually need to try molding project myself to understand the process. I want an accurate Rarity and Rainbow Dash! I'll save my money for it!

OtakuSquirrel In reply to PlanetXiN [2011-11-06 17:12:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I've got lots of photos that show my whole process, so those can help a lot if you do give any of this a shot.

LOL! Yeah, at this point every cent I get is helping me break even on the cost of my materials.
That I've actually managed that much is totally amazing!

Well, it's probably less messy and easier to clean than all that nasty blood and guts... plus you have the satisfaction in knowing you're making a lot of people very happy

Doesn't make me feel so bad about wanting to get 'em all at once after seeing that many casts all together. Be waiting for the mane six to be complete before I put an order in tho as I mentioned in a previous thread

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to RallyFurre [2011-10-09 17:26:54 +0000 UTC]

Yes, no worries if anyone wants to wait. Balancing my time making these and trying to work on the sculpting is difficult... Once the main six are done, the pressure is off and I fully expect to get slammed with orders.

Oh my! I feel like this pic is the CMC's failed attempt at being barbers~

'Why would we need barbers in ponyville anywho?'

'Iunno but if it gives us our cutie marks...'

OtakuSquirrel In reply to dustysculptures [2011-10-09 07:13:59 +0000 UTC]

When I gathered all the pony pieces together, it just seemed to be a bit too lacking in color, so I grabbed them (and Dash) just to add a bit of something to it. I didn't really expect it to get so many comments.

If it hasn't been asked already, have you ever thought about doing sets for the CMC as well if you ever had the time? I admit, I only thought of it just now after seeing that you have some of them.

The CMC are very much a part of my master plan.

I have no idea when I'll be able to get to them though...

I'm very glad to hear that, and I can wait considering how well you can make these kits when you have the time for it.
