Two years ago I was reading a book about Dutch sagas. In it was a beautiful story about a real Corpse Bride and this story really started to haunt my mind. From the moment I had read about it, I knew I wanted to create a drawing inspired by the tale. It took two years for me to decide how I wanted it to look... but here it finally is. I'll gave you a summary of the story.

When you hear the sound of a trotting horse near the meadows of the Vrolijke Dreef, be aware of de Doodsbruid (the dead bride). Many years ago, her fiancé, a gentle farmer, was travelling towards the place were their wedding should be held, but a fierce snow storm forced him to pass the night in a small inn. he stabled his horse and went to sleep. But the innkeeper had heard of his wedding and all the gold and silver he took with him to pay for the preparations. In the middle of the night, he grabbed his large knife and ended the farmer's happy dreams with brutal murder.
He took his money, buried the body in the orchard next to the inn and chased away the horse, the only silent witness. But the horse returned and showed the other farmers were the body of the dead bridegroom laid in frozen ground. So everyone knew he was murdered.
When they told the bride about the murder, she did not say a thing. No one ever heard her voice again. Often she went outside at night, dressed in her silken bridal dress, to walk near the meadow were her fiancé was murdered. One cold winter morning the people found her beneath the apple-trees, where her lover had been buried. She was dead. She had not been able to bear her misfortune.
Still, when the moon is waxing, some people see her walking in the meadow, with her raven black hair and her thin white skin like cobwebs. Silent as the grave...

edit: I made a scan, so the contrast and colours are closer to the original drawing. The photograph was too dark and too blue. The scan took away some subtile colouring and shading, but it's acceptable for me now.
