I'm not much good of a story teller, but consider this alternate ending:

Wirt saw the woodsman unconscious as the beast appeared, offering that keeping the flame in the lantern lit in exchange to keep his brother alive. However, Wirt was tempted to accept the offer, giving him no choice but to do it. The woodsman, who was finally awake, tried to stop Wirt on what he's doing by hacking his axe to the beast. But the beast already predicted what's coming and avoided the attack, making a free space between him and the woodsman. The beast lashed back at him, making the woodsman tumbled and fell. Impaling him on a stray tree branch directly through his chest, barely missing his heart, but nevertheless it was enough to immediately kill him. The beast used this to his advantage by threatening Wirt of what he can do if someone disobeyed him. Wirt, who was both astonished and afraid, finally accepted his offer. And in promise to turn her family back to normal, Beatrice also accepted and joined Wirt in his search to find Edelwoods that can be processed to oil in order to keep the lamp lit, and to preserve Greg's soul. The scene then cuts to black with only Wirt's final words:

"I'm sorry Greg, there was no other choice."

So here you go, a fanart of OTGW where Wirt is a little bit older and I swore that he REALLY looks like Bertholdt Heh, Wirtholdt. One does not simply watch this show without crying while doing fanart and listening to this .
