Pokédex Entry: Cuburn is the Fire-type Starter of the North Woods region, and arguably the most famous and charismatic of the Starters in this region. A small, cute Pokemon, it is the most popular of the starters. However, its cute appearance belies its potentially dangerous nature as a literal firestarter.
Cuburn and its evolution live in hardwood forests across North America, especially in the northern regions. While the species stretches down into the deserts of the American Southwest, it is most abundant in montane forests with thick understory vegetation. As a result of their widespread nature, they will often blunder into suburban neighborhoods, which usually results in an uproar within those neighborhoods. This is both because of fear from Cuburn’s firestarting tendencies, and the desire to see the cute Pokemon in the wild. In these instances, it is suggested that a Ranger be called to remove them safely.
Cuburn is omnivorous, and mostly eats berries and herbs that it finds while foraging. Its later evolutionary stages will add more meat to that diet. First-stage Bug-type Pokemon, especially Caterpie, Sewaddle, and Wurmple, may sometimes form a part of its diet, due to the ease in defeating them with Fire-type attacks. Sewaddle, in particular, is a major prey item. However, given the choice, Cuburn will almost always go for berries instead. They are also prey for several other Pokemon, including Luxray, Micoyo, Liepard, Lycanroc, and Braviary. To defend against predation early on, Cuburn produces heat in the orange patches of its fur, and learns the move Smokescreen at a relatively low level.
Cuburn is a fairly skittish Pokemon, preferring to stick to the dark in order to forag. While it is not totally nocturnal, it still prefers the shadows, in which its mostly dark coloration serves as camouflage. It forages for food during dusk and dawn, making it crepuscular in nature. Preferring dusk, it will often still be foraging in the early evening. In the summer, campfires will be lit by Trainers and campers. If these fires are well-made and remain lit through the night, they will attract Cuburn , which often fall asleep by the warmth of the campfire as it goes out. However, once the Trainers wake up, they risk startling Cuburn, which will run away and use the move Smokescreen to disguise its escape. In some cases, cinders in the hot smoke, or cinders that come from the fur of Cuburn, will fly free in the process of escape. These cinders may start small forest fires, which are obviously a threat to the forest at large. This is why campers are warned by Rangers to tend their fires correctly, and to put them out when they go to sleep, in order to prevent these incidents from occurring.
Cuburn, as stated, is one of the most popular Starter Pokemon in the North Woods Region. As with all Starters in the region, Trainers must show an understanding of the Pokemon, and of basic survival skills, in order to be allowed to catch them. Cuburn are caught by labs and brought to specially designated and maintained forest stands. Here, Trainers must start a campfire, safely and closer to the evening. If the fire is well-maintained, Cuburn will be attracted to the fire, giving Trainers the opportunity to catch them. If the fire is too small, it won’t capture Cuburn’s attention. If too large, it will frighten Cuburn away, and not come close. The fire, fittingly, must be just right.
Origin: Cuburn is based on the American black bear (Ursus americanus americanus), a species common to New England. The Fire-typing and association with forest fires is a reference to the most iconic black bear in the United States, Smokey the Bear.
