Description They had traveled so far --
pursuing relentlessly their storied destination,
the place that everybody dreamed of
the dream that nobody realized.

They had worked toward their aim with every flutter of the heart,
enduring the laughter and joy and beauty and bitter warmth,
living through all the anger and sadness and sin and life and
everything that could have,
would have,
caused heartbreak.

They had survived through the autumn and winter,
the ever so unpredictable seasons
changing at the whimsy of life.
They grew vibrant and beautiful
before discarding their colors
to lay bone-bare before the harsh realities of
their world
in hopes of reaching spring,
where they would sprout leaves of hope
and bloom until they were the fruits of the harvest themselves.
They would be beautiful for
eternity,
they thought.

So here they were.
They lay side by side,
hands clasped,
dressed in good clothes they could not afford,
their pretty faces caked with makeup
to hide their petty flaws
so they were presentable enough to reap the rewards at the end of their path.

Together, their faces titled to gaze through
their choking prison,
through their confinements and limitations and
through the monotonous expanse of earth and sky,
and to the twinkling stars that lay beyond --
guiding glows lit by the lost wanderers before them.
It was teeming with such wondrous life,
yet so dead at the same time.

And they were finally there.
Hidden, nestled in a haze of wasted dreams and forgotten hopes,
there was a haven they could call their own,
it was a senseless world without fears or insecurities,
without hate or betrayal,
without anger and sadness and sin and life,
without any of the ugly things that defined them as humans.
They had enough of that already.

But with their gentle features uncreased
and their eyes closed with patience,
they waited silently for the blessings of the future
and to dream away the cruelties of the past,
when they had already reached the land they had strived for.

It was a pity.
For all the work they had put into reaching their destination,
they would not wake up and realize they had already arrived.

I GOT THAT THEY DIED BUT I DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE REST OF IT. THE SUBTLE NUANCES ESCAPED ME LIKE JERRY ESCAPING TOM.
