the blunt truth of it is even better

The hands.

There is a painting called the Fall of Icarus - a huge, beautiful painting, and there (!) in the corner are two legs flailing out of the sea.

The same uninterrupted flow where no one notices the detail unless something else gives it away. In Icarus, the painting is bucolic; in this, the antithesis.

I love.

It's awesome that you did this with watercolour. It's interesting to see a grayscale watercolour piece, as they're usually so colorful.

You mentioned that it's loosely based on a short story, but I think it also fits nicely with T.S. Elliot's poem "The Hollow Men":

We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats' feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar

Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;

Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom
Remember us -- if at all -- not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men.

Great.

I have never read "The Hollow Men", but this reminds me a lot of the gray men who smoke time in "Momo", by Michael Ende.
