Built between 1950 to 1951 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, the SS United States is both the largest ocean liner built entirely in the US and the fastest transatlantic ocean liner (breaking the RMS Queen Mary's 14-year-long record). She enjoyed a 17-year-long career before being retired in 1969. During her career, the United States saw some notable passengers aboard her, such as Marilyn Monroe, Salvador Dalí, and even Walt Disney himself. The latter would go on to feature the ship in his 1962 film production, Bon Voyage!.

Between the 70s and early 90s, the United States was sold to multiple companies who unfortunately couldn't make a profit off the ship. Upon having her interiors almost entirely stripped and her fittings sold for auction, the United States was towed to Pier 82 in Philadelphia in the late 90s, where she remains berthed as of January 2022 in a rusting state.

Since 2009, the SS United States Conservancy has been raising funds to save the ship. The United States nearly met the scrapper's torch in 2015 when the group almost gave up due to then-dwindling funds, but regained faith soon afterwards when sufficient donations came in via extended fundraising. The SS United States' fate still remains unclear, but the group continues to investigate restoration plans for the ship.
