I usually add some noise (I use photoshop!) but you can find noise brushes that gives that sandy texture

Hum. The eye-marks are just like the kitty Fallen is crouched over in the little den, but the white markings aren't the same (dead cat has white fur all around the ruff instead of the stripe all the way down). Another sibling, maybe? A parent?
