There they are, all together! I so love the illustrations on their own, but put together here they really shine. This is where that grandeur of old-school naturalist illustrations really shows. I like how simplistic your poster is too, in terms of colour and layout. It's not so complex that it distracts, easy to look over, while still conveying a lot of information. Great piece of natural history work!

Edited to add: for some reason the download link does not seem to be working for me. Don't know if it's a temporary error or actually broken?

So glad you like this one, it's one of my favourites too! I was so swept up by sudden interest for this subject that I think I completed it in 2 days. If only all my projects were so efficient!
The download is working fine for me. "Temporary error" sounds about right for DeviantArt

I always learn so much from your work, fascinating and informative (I also noticed Misty was one of the giveaway winners, I shall have to go visit her to stare at it in person at some point )

One could say that We met on dA and she's become my best friend over the years, chat on skype every day and our harpg storylines are completely intertwined at this point, a whole lot of RPing.

Gotta love those kinds of friendships! Sounds like me and decors (except I lost my RP mojo a while ago - It was so much fun when we did RP though).

This is wonderful. Each image is the perfect representation of the three species. You can see the clear differences between them all - and not just colour. You've got that unique ear shape down spot on. The difference in back shapes. Darn, even teh subtle facial structure differences! I'm in awe! This is incredible. You'd struggle to find a book with as good, clear, and informative a reference as this. Fantastic work!

oxpecker In reply to Bandarai [2018-01-30 04:45:15 +0000 UTC]

I suppose the differences are obvious when you look at them side-by-side like this, but if I met them in person, especially from afar or obscured by foliage, I think telling the two African species apart could be difficult because the variation between individual elephants is quite great (just like people). Not all forest elephants have rounded ears, long tusks, etc. The main tell would probably be habitat and size.
Many thanks for your supportive and thoughtful comments!

Isn't the forest elephant a different genus though?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

oxpecker In reply to Kagansaurus [2018-01-23 22:14:10 +0000 UTC]

Don't think so?

Kagansaurus In reply to oxpecker [2018-01-24 01:48:19 +0000 UTC]

But what about the study that found it to be more closely related to Paleoloxodon than to Loxodon, would that not render it in a different genus?

Loxodonta africana in Northern Africa? The only elephants were there is Loxodonta atlantica, and is extinct.

I went off data provided by WWF. I believe there are specialized African bush elephants who make their home in the Sahara.

jesusgamarra In reply to oxpecker [2018-01-24 09:55:26 +0000 UTC]

Actual Southern Sahara maybe... but in Morocco, Egypt, Libya, Western Sahara... only Loxodonta atlantica was there (became extinct at Roman Empire times)

oxpecker In reply to jesusgamarra [2018-01-24 10:08:26 +0000 UTC]

What I have in the diagram is their historical range from WWF. I will probably make some changes or add a note to the poster to clarify this. Thank you for pointing it out!

I have noticed elephants seem to be special animals to many people. Maybe because they seem to have almost human-like intelligence and capacity for emotion.
