Description Grévy's zebra, drawn from a photograph which I took at Zoo Berlin. At home in Australia I've only seen plains zebra kept in zoos, so it's always fascinating to see this very unique round-eared white-bellied larger species for a change. The Grévy's is also the most threatened of the three zebra species, even if they are common in zoos.

You can see the drawing process at my Instagram and FB:

Did you notice the prominent ergots on this zebra's fetlocks? These are small harmless horny growths, sometimes found in horses too.

Lovely, clean drawing! Having painted a Grevy's before, I know the work that goes into those endless fine stripes haha. But when they all come together in the end the resulting effect is pretty. Interesting to see those ergots on the fetlocks. I've never seen or noticed them before, not on horses, zebras, or any other equids. Are they found in other hooved mammals too? - wait hold on, looking at your reindeer drawing I just realised I do in fact know ergots on deer and allies whoops xD Rephrase to: didn't know equids had them too.

I agree, it's very satisfying to see it all come together with stripes in the end. It somehow masks anatomical mistakes as well
In deer and bovids they are called dewclaws and there is bone structure connecting them to the fetlock. As far as I know the horse's ergot is just a superficial callous without any underlying structure, although it's commonly believed that they are vestigial nails or paw pads.

I love zebras!  Challenging to get allll their stripes looking good, but your painting looks wonderful.

My half-Arabian mare would get long ergots that we'd sometimes trim back a bit to keep her legs tidy-looking.  It's like they were fingernail/hoof remnants that didn't know what to do with themselves when equids went to having only one toe.

Thank you so much! I actually enjoyed doing the stripes, although I had to refer to photos very closely.
You're probably right about that. I've never seen them in real life, but I will look more closely for them now.

Thank you!
You live in Berlin? I love the city very much, I stayed there for almost a month in summer 2016. The zoo is one of those old historic city zoos, unfortunately this means some of the enclosures are too small (the same can be said for London and Sydney). I have mixed feelings about it, because I enjoy getting close to the animals and I appreciate the conservation work that zoos do behind the scenes.

Yes, it's been for 22 years now
I absolutely agree with you - the buildings are adorable, but there's not much space (in fact the chinese, who gifted Berlin two panda bears were a bit pissed off that the new panda enclosure is too near to the lions and this could make the pandas nervous...)
But then the Tierpark in the east of the city is much better for you: the enclosures are bigger (in fact the Tierpark has less animals and not such a rich variety) and theres a lot of walking to do between the enclosures. So it's more likely a trip to a forrest with some animals. But I like it there

Yes, I had planned to visit the Tierpark but didn't get around to it, hopefully I'll have a chance to visit it in future.
The London and Sydney city zoos have a similar situation, with larger enclosures in a site outside the city, more suitable for breeding programs and animals which need more space.
