Description [Enter Cardinal, hidden and Gabrach]

Gabrach: Cardinal! Cardinal, where are you? I know you're out here! The priest ratted you out! Damn it, show yourself, you coward!

Cardinal: Dear God, what could this beastly authority need with me? Has it finally come, I wonder.

Gabrach: I know what happened now! I checked the records and I know! It was your fault for all those deaths and it's time to pay for them. You're going to die, one way or another! You'd better just come quietly!

Cardinal: No, it's returned to me! The tireless tirade which hopes to cut my throat out. It's vengeance knows no bounds, so willing to take hold of a hapless and mindless ant that holds the pretense of control in his hand. Control by weapon indeed.

Gabrach: Damn it Cardinal, I know you're here! [Draws sword]

[Cardinal walks into the open area, draws his own sword]

Cardinal: Do not speak such tongue the blessed land of the Lord.

Gabrach: Me? What about you and your sins? Do you know how many deaths you've caused? It's time you paid for them! Get ready to die!

Cardinal: I have paid for those deaths! I have paid in tumoultus guilt, in the tyrannical swirl of the whirlwind of retribution. I stand not in the center but inside the weaves itself, thrown around without strength, without life, without hope. I am to die there but it shall not be by your own hands! Keep your steel within its hold and I shall hold my hand as well.

Gabrach: What the - Shut up! You think I'm just going to let you go after what you've done? If you won't come quietly then I'll just have to kill you now!

Cardinal: Mind what I said; I have the skills of a greater blade-arm. You have no possibility to defeat me in the art oAf the fencing. Dissapate, leave, and let God judge me as he will. There is no position for you in my debacle - you have others share your so-called 'wisdom' with. Take your mind and your body elsewhere.

Gabrach: Or what? You'll stop me?

[Gavriel tries to walk past, Gabrach points sword at him]

Gabrach: I guess you want to do this the hard way. Fine; goodbye Cardinal!

[Sword fighting ensues; Swords clash, a few swipes and thrust getting close and others bouncing off harmlessly for several moments before Cardinal gets upper-hand while Gabrach becomes sloppy and Gavriel's sword slides into Gabrach's side]

Gabrach: Oh.. [Slides to ground, dead]

Cardinal: Goodbye, Gabrach. It seems in that moment I decided the path which I shall walk; there is no returning whence I came. It is unfortunate that you have died, but be grateful that you died in the name of valour - you have no burden of life as I do now. You are now another soul to stand on mine own. This weight grew unbearable long ago. I hope to die as you have; as the face of true justice. Not as I am right now - I am the villian now, the evil which haunts the end of every story but the question is - am I redeemable or damned? I have no time to ponder these questions. A priest will undoubtedly look here soon and I will not be here. It's time to leave; May the Father, Son and Holy Ghost see you through the afterlife.

This needs to be performed! I like how the Cardinal is aware of his downfall, its poetic.

I know, I loved writing how he knew that he had done something horrible but he didn't feel true remorse for it. Gives him a darker presence in the eyes of the audience I think.

And I've been looking into submitting it for this contest which is coming up soon in April where they judge non-played plays. I figure I'd give it a shot; the only real requirement is that it has to be 80 minutes long. Not sure how to time it besides reading the whole thing myself...
