In 1979, Papua New Guinea Aquired 9 Ex- Norwegian F-5A Tiger II Fighter Aircraft and another 5 Ex - USAF F-5E Tiger II from USAF stocks, All delivered between 1980 - 1982 Replacing the F2H-3 Banshees, Being Supplemented with Sukhoi Su-24 Strike Multirole Aircraft.

During the Bougainville conflict, The F-5 Tiger IIs where Used for Close Air support alongside with Sukhoi Su-24s against Bougainville Revolutionary Army Targets.

At the End of Bougainville conflict, it formed a Aerobatic Team called "Birds of Paradise". first time in Papua New Guinea History.

the F-5 Tiger IIs began showing age as Papua New guinea Air Element had Plans to Replace it with New LIFT aircraft. while the small numbers of Still Airworthy F-5s where only used in Air shows.
