Well, I can offer two actually. Most of my best shots were taken round ten and eleven am or around four pm. It seems that those times offer my camera the right lighting. I think it is camera specific really. If the lighting is right, you can sometimes get away with not using a flash, and then improve your photo once downloaded, a lesson I discovered with my first camera.
The second is to take a photo of a object, like a rock for example and play with the saturation settings. This was taken with high saturation on a borrowed camera by mistake, but by taking shots of the same object, you can see which setting suits your environment. After the first session, you know if it is cloudy this works, but in the snow that setting works.
Then of course, the weather has an effect. My camera struggles with bright sunlight, but yours might be better when it is sunny. Compare your object shots to find the right fit.
