Description Black Jack, my Black Bellied Delta Cal King, just chilling in a heart shaped candy dish. I love how relaxed he looks in this pic. First Valentine themed photo with one of my herps.

Glad you like his name. It was given to him by a friend of mine b/c when I got him I was a bit stumped on what to call him. But I think it definitely fits him.

Oh yeah he's definitely a very laid back guy. And he's just a baby too! A lot of baby snakes can be flighty and nervous but Black Jack seems to have no fear at all.

Ohh yes, I remember my Ball Python, she was like that a lot, bitey little things too when they're young haha. Its really neat that he's as chill as he is for a baby, lucky you :3 <3

I've only had a few that were bitey and they were all females. And even then...it didn't last long. Maybe just the first few weeks or so. I have also noticed that it seems like snakes in general are more bitey with men then with woman. I don't know if that actually holds anything...but my personal observations makes me think it's a higher testosterone level that they can sense in men that maybe puts them on guard more. Also they can read your mood and body language better then almost any other animal. I do not pick up or handle any of my snakes unless I am totally calm and relaxed. I've noticed that if inside I am feeling upset they too will get a bit nervous and weary of me. Again these are just my own thoughts on this but I think that kind of stuff definitely plays a roll in how a snake is going to be when you are handling it.

I see, I had noticed a tad, my friend has a male Ball and he's been pretty chill since he was a baby, whereas my Tissa was always pretty nervous/timid/bitey. I suppose that is possible though, Tissa seemed pretty nervous in general around myself and my male or female friends, it must have just been her nature...then again my friends Ball would go after guys, yet be loving towards ladies, you could be onto something haha. I have always tried to be calm with her, but I think my nervousness showed when it came time to feed her and I'm sure that effected her too, not sure why I was so nervous honestly :c Both times she bit me were my fault though, being new to handling a snake, poor girl. I think you're right though, moods and such like can effect the snake and how they react to you :3

I've been around snakes since I was 6 yrs old so I just don't have any nervousness with them. But even someone that is older and is new with being around snakes can still learn how to properly be around them. It may help to just hold a snake for a while on a couch and watch TV. Just "be" with it. You'll notice a BIG difference in their behavior once you can learn to relax more around them.

Is he a constrictor? What does he eat? Sorry for asking so much, he's just so beautiful <3 Like a model snake!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganFireSnake In reply to ToadAdventure [2012-02-12 12:42:37 +0000 UTC]

I don't mind answering any question on snakes or other reptiles. Yes he is a constrictor and eats frozen/thawed (F/T) mice. Though I feed him all ready dead mice he, like most other snakes feed F/T mice, still have the instinct to constrict around the food item when I first give it to them. Then once they feel like they have "killed" the dead mouse they will unravel their coils and eat their meal.
