Description There! It's officially a series now! (phew) two is a coincidence but three, three shows intent, it shows purpose, it shows that I not just playing dress-up with some childhood heroes (ok, that last one is still true but at least it's a little more legitimate now). I picked Jasmine (Aladdin, 1992)because of my friend, Gina's, nickname. We were joking around with Disney quotes and she said her favorite was how the Sultan announces Jasmine's full name. She was particularly tough to do for a number of reasons. First of all being, I don't really know too much about Eastern and Middle Eastern costume history. It was fun doing the research about it but without a specific time or location (reasons two and three), I didn't really have two much to jump off from. I decided the best time was the explosion of math and discovery in the Middle East, which happened during the Western Dark Ages. This didn't narrow it down very much and because of the whole "don't draw people" thing in a lot of Islamic art, it was tough finding any sort of reference picture, especially of women. I also didn't want to resort to putting her in the stereotypical belly-dancing outfit, I knew I could find a piece that was elegant and beautiful but was neither underwear nor a burqa. I was about to give her an Indian sari when I considered Persian fashions. Lo and behold, I found a traditional dress that was exactly what I was looking for. Hopefully, I did Jasmine justice and I didn't annoy anyone too badly (either with my choices or with this incredibly long post.) Please let me know what you think.

love love love. Your design is actually very similar to this guy's: arsalankhanartist.deviantart.c… . So I hereby vote that this be Jasmine's new official outfit. Cuz the belly dancing outfit is just that, for belly dancing. It's not something people wore in their regular daily lives like Jasmine was portrayed.

Myself a Persian Descent, but belong to Northern Pakistan (Azad Kashmir) since thousand ago. I find this image more better than original one because it's represent more proper princess, also its look closest to respect family unlike oringal looked like harem (Slave) of King. If you were a father or mother, how do you felt when you see your own daughter wearing something too slut. Plus there are local women in this movie wore same thing which is stupid. Princesses supposed wore different from common people in real life whatever it in europe or middle east. I wish Disney research bit more like you did. She is an arabian, not persian. Sari is indian dress which not suit her because of arabian backgroud. I hope you already know that Arabian and Persian are not same people, they have 100% different backgrounds

Shoomlah's series of historical princesses had to address this same issue and her answer sums up my thought-process as well. [link]

Even with a proper dress it showcases her personality as a bit of a smart ass. But thats good.

Good job on this! I don't know much about cultures or traditional clothing in the Middle East, but I have a gut feeling this would be FAR more accurate than the costume from the original movie.

This is actually a Persian costume but it was hard to find anything non- Burqa and the original story was set in China so I had to find a compromise.

Cool - I saw it was Persian in the description, and I think that's really neat you'd actually situate Jasmine someplace instead of just some random pseudo-Arab culture that likely does not exist outside of Disney.

Yeah, Disney took some *cough*rascist*cough* liberties with Aladdin. I get having to simplify things and generalizing (since most of their fairy tales are artistic interpretations of various eras) but doing a little research and not just relying on Golden Age Hollywood stereotypes could have saved them from the protesting that happened at the opening of this movie.

Yeah. Some of the Disney movies, I think they did a decent job researching...but this one isn't one of them. That's why I tend to interpret the movies as just taking place in some fantasy world - it saves me a lot of headaches that way. Of course, the occasional references to Allah and that opening sequence in the movie kinda killed that fantasy for me, but it's worth a shot, right?

Yeah, they tried so hard to backpedal with the "it's flat and immense and the heat is intense" line but they weren't fooling anyone. we all heard the original

KitakLaw In reply to paigehwarren [2011-07-25 21:09:59 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I heard the original, actually, since the first time I watched the movie was on VHS when it was already the censored version. Still, word gets around about what it originally was, you know?

paigehwarren In reply to KitakLaw [2011-07-25 21:17:58 +0000 UTC]

Wow, really? I still have the original on my iPod. Instead of that line, it's "where they cut off your hand if they don't like your face" that lines with with "it's barbaric but hey, it's home"

OMG, you're the first person I see who is not Persian and drew a correct Persian costume. Not some sterotypical arabic culture with covering hair or bellydance costume which people always mix up with Persian culture.
Awesome drawing

I noticed that all people (or, all people that I know of) who tried to draw Jasmine in a hisctorical costume complained about finding something accurate. I think your choice is great, itΒ΄s elegant without the belly-free stereotype!

This is beautiful! But the Sultan never announces Jas's full name, her full name is Jasmine of Agrabah like Jesus was of Nazareth. He says "Allah forbid you should have any daughters," when he yells at her.

Not according to the reference pictures I was basing this off of. However, from a practical standpoint, fans tend to recognize Jasmine by her distinctive braid so I needed to leave that obvious.

Thank you! I like to think I did the time period justice. Disney designed it for Western stereotypes (which is irritating but she IS an awesome character) so I didn't have a whole lot to start with.
