Description
Troia was born into the once-prominent Darkhawk family, a demon clan that once conspired with the Violets to dominate Altian politics. As the daughter of the Clan Head's favorite Consort, she was destined to lead a rather charmed and pampered life. Until, of course, it was discovered that the Clan Head, Ethan Darkhawk, was not her father. Instead she was the product of his only son, Pares, whom her mother seduced in the hopes that he would help free her from enslavement. Ethan had her mother killed, but Pares fled with Troia, and found an ally in his half-sister, Diesre Violet Darkhawk NicBurr. She sent them off into obscurity, knowing their father would not stop until Pares paid for his betrayal.
Years later, Ethan finally met his (well-deserved) end, brought down through Diesre's brilliant machinations. She promptly took over the Darkhawk Clan and brought Pares out of hiding to oversee it.
No sooner did he step in, however, then some old enemies came calling, and Troia became an orphan. Diesre was left as her only real relative, but she had three children of her own, a kingdom to run, and the mess her father and brother left behind to wrangle with. Troia was sent to the Phoenix Academy, where she made good marks and was, by all accounts, a soft-spoken, smart, but otherwise unassuming student. Much to her aunt's dismay, she left the Academy when she was fourteen, returned to the demon colonies, and bought an apprenticeship at the House of Night--rumored to train the best courtesans in all of Altia.
All demon clans use special tattoos to mark/control their members, and the House of Night is infamous for the henna-like tattoos that trace the hands of their disciples. Each mark denotes a particular skill that the student has mastered. Troia mastered enough to catch the eye of Sebastien Ressaras, a powerful demon lord who claimed her as his Consort, and laid his scorpion mark across her ivory back. Troia seemed to have found her calling, and was happy with Sebastien. She was the perfect Consort and somehow always retained a sense of innocence and trustworthiness about her. Sebastien trusted her.
And for his troubles, he wound up with a knife in his back courtesy of a familiar tattoo-laced hand. As it turned out, the Ressaras Clan was responsible for keeping the Darkhawks in line, and that included Sebastien giving the order for Pares's death.
Her father's murder. And "an eye for an eye" is the usual brand of demon justice.
With blood on her hands, she fled the Ressaras Clan, and was quickly snatched up by a powerful upstart, the demon lord Lukash Shizada. Shizada had a devious plot in mind, and held Troia hostage in order to barter for her cousin's hand--Diesre's eldest daughter, Corinne. Shizada's mark, an array of shadowy tentacles rising from a black abyss, graces Troia's right foot. And she dared not try to escape, lest the Ressaras Clan claim their vengeance. Instead, Shizada vowed to protect her from them--so long as he got what he wanted. Troia offered herself up in Corinne's place, but Shizada only had eyes for Rinn.
Eventually Shizada got what he wanted, and Troia was released. She wandered for a time, ever cautious of her enemies, and never feeling like there was any place she really belonged.
And then she met Darien Hawkspar, Head of the Hawkspar Clan. The Hawkspars had once been part of the Darkhawk Clan, but had broken off some time ago due to a rather nasty disagreement. The Hawkspars currently in charge, however, had been seeking for some time to absorb the Darkhawk Clan, namely through pursuing Diesre. She flouted them all and married the future King of the Fae Dark Court instead, leaving the two clans at odds once more.
They did not know Troia was a Darkhawk (as she never bore that clan's mark), and when she met Darien, she presented herself simply as a lost disciple of the House of Night. Of course all he had to do was take one look at her hands before he invited her into his home to demonstrate her skills.
When he found out who she was and what she was running from, though, he promptly turned her out. She pleaded for a chance to serve as his Consort, for that was the only role she ever felt comfortable in.
Darien could not resist her beauty (and er, other skills...), and placed his Clan's hawk talons around her left arm. But there were conditions to his protection, and Troia became little more than a slave, as her mother had been.
And yet, she never once complained.
And when Diesre threatened to step in on her niece's behalf, Troia smiled sweetly and told her, "There is power in submission."
Indeed, some might argue she knows exactly what she's doing...
Of course, the marks on her hands could tell you that.
